At the moment I'm making do with a 15-minute system S3 sleep timer (set in Kubuntu System Settings > Power Management > Activity Settings > Define a special behaviour > always sleep after 15 minutes), which works well enough for now.
I'd really like to get the screen to go off after 5-10 minutes. Logically I'd use System Settings > Power Management > Advanced > Screen Energy Saving > Switch off after x minutes, but with my setup (AMD R9 380X, amdgpu driver, Iiyama XU2292HS connected via HDMI), this makes the screen go dark, then the pointer disappears, then the screen comes back on (on its own).
I'd also really like to have my data HDD to power down after x minutes. KDE's partition manager has no such settings that I've seen, so I installed the app I'm used to being the gnome disks utility, which on Lubuntu 18.04 would tell the drive to auto power down after x minutes idle time, however on Kubuntu this setting does nothing. The menu button in the disks utility has a 'standby now' option which (after authentication), successfully spins down the drive.
I've done a bit of reading up about HDD power management and what I've found is this:

I have two theories. Whatever method the gnome disks utility uses to implement timed auto hdd spindown is either resulting in the drive saying 'not supported', or maybe it's a permissions issue?
