How to Disable Sleep Mode in Windows 10

By default, Windows 10 automatically goes to sleep when it is left unattended for 15 minutes and 30 minutes when on battery and when connected to the power supply respectively.

Initiated either automatically or manually, Sleep Mode saves the current state of your Windows in the RAM, thus consuming only power only required to keep the critical hardware resources like RAM and HDD active. In layman’s language, Sleep Mode puts your computer in semi-shutdown state.

To start using Windows 10 again, you can wake it up by pressing the Power button.

Although Sleep Mode lets you save power and reduce hardware resource consumption, sometime you may find it annoying, especially when using Windows 10 at home, where you leave your PC unattended quite often, and come back only to see that it went to sleep for good.

In such instances, you may want to disable Sleep Mode.

Assuming that you’re using a laptop, here’s how you can keep Windows 10 from going to sleep in a few simple steps:

Step 1
Get to the Power & sleep window

Right-click Start, and click Power Options. This opens the Power & sleep window. This window allows you to manage display timeout settings, manage other power related configurations, etc.

Step 2
Disable Sleep Mode (when PC is running on battery)

Select Never from the On battery power, PC goes to sleep after drop-down list present under the Sleep section. This keeps Windows 10 from going to sleep when left unattended for infinite amount of time, even when it is not connected to the power supply and is running on battery. By default, this option is set to 15 minutes.

Step 3
Disable Sleep Mode (when PC is connected to power source)

Select Never from the When plugged in, PC goes to sleep after drop-down list present under the Sleep section. This keeps Windows 10 from entering Sleep mode when left unattended for infinite amount of time, even when it is plugged in to a power outlet. By default, this option is set to 30 minutes.
