I'm stupid. How do I get F@H to work on these projects? I was just crunching cancer with my RX5700. How do I switch to COVID?

You can't switch to it. Its just sent out by the host randomly. Lately, most units were this, until it went bad recently. just keep crunching, and watch shat unit you are crunching. I am sure you will get one. I have 12 boxes/cards, but only 2 are even running, they can;t get work.

check the log file. Its not really downloading.
I know. What can I do about it?

Code:

Quick, whats the AT team # and where can i get a passkey?
Team 198. Passkey is easy, I will look it up, and update this post in a minute. Been so long, I forgot how I got mine.

Edit: Here:

Now, after you get the passkey and enter it, you still have to complete (I think) 10 work units before you start getting bouses. But its worth it, the bonuses are HUGE. Base 38k, credit after passkey one million. (just one example)

i'm folding for 198, project 11748 currently.
Awaiting passkey in email

Lets see how much this jacks up my home electricity bill, lol, any tips on maximizing efficiency?

i did F@A back in the mid and late 2000s

I have 20 boxes, 12 of which do GPU tasks (the majority of the electric $$$) If I didvide my electric bill evenly over the 20 computers I am running (probably a high estimate on $) using the CPU (12 cores minimum in my case) and GPU@100% 24/7 its $37 a month. Yours will probably be less.

mark, i wonder whats your incentive to have 20 PCs set up (that i assume are all owned by you, and electricity is paid for by you) to do all this for F@H..
Why do u do so much?

My dad died of cancer. I had cancer, and lost my bladder, prostate, hearing and balance to cancer. So I am now deaf and dizzy and have a bag to empty all the time. Think maybe I have some reason to try and help cure cancer ?

I was just crunching cancer with my RX5700. How do I switch to COVID?
Although Markfw answered this already...
You can't switch to it. Its just sent out by the host randomly. Lately, most units were this,
...here is also a FAQ about it:
Folding Forum/ [FAQ] SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) projects
On March 14 toTOW said:
1. How do I choose to help with the COVID-19 related projects ?
To help in the fight against COVID-19, you need to select
- Webcontrol : "Any disease" in the list "I support research fighting"
- Advanced Control/FAHControl : Configure > Advanced, select "Any" in the list "Cause Preference"
The COVID-19 related projects are on top priority and will be assigned automatically.

2. Can I choose to work only on the COVID-19 related projects ?
No, you can't.
In FoldingHome, you never choose to work on only one project (or family of projects). The setting described above is a preference, but if no work is available to match your preferences, the system is designed to send you what need to be done at the time of your work request.

3. Is my system able to help ?
There are WU available for both GPUs and CPUs. Folding@Home supports nVidia and AMD GPUs through OpenCL on Windows and Linux.
The CPUs are supported on Windows, Linux and MacOS.

4. My GPU is supported, but it not detected.
You need to update your drivers with the latest ones downloaded from nVidia or AMD website.
Windows Updates often breaks OpenCL support when it updates the drivers automatically. To fix it, reinstall the drivers you downloaded from nVidia or AMD website.
On Linux, in addition to the proprietary drivers from the GPU maker, you may have to manually install "opencl-icd" matching with the drivers you installed.

5. Can you add an option to the list of causes to specifically support COVID-19 ?
No the categories are currently hard coded. We are now in the end of the development of a new client.

6. How do I know that I'm working on COVID-19 related projects ?
If you're running a project that's listed here, you're fighting COVID-19 :
CPU : 14328 - 14329 - 14530 - 14531
GPU : 11741 to 11751

To be completed ...
Answer #5 sounds as if it may be possible to make such a choice in a future client software update. Edit, elsewhere it is suggested that a new version may still be more than a year in the making, and their server software needs to be updated for such an option too.

yes interested and saw the appeal to join the fight, but I am a newbee here with fah.

just installed fah on my home desktop ryzen 3600 and GTX 1060 6GB. while install is a breeze, performance is not necessarily so.

after half an hour GPU folding PPD estimate is 67K only. the gpu is intentionally MSI afterburner throttled to 50% power consumption, still awful low perf number in comparison to other benchmarks. where do I start looking for the bottleneck? nvidia driver 441.66 on Win 10 is used.

@silverdawn, since the researchers prefer fast turnaround of the jobs scheduled to volunteers, many of the points given for a job depend on the speed of the job done. That's the so-called quick return bonus, but you only get it after you registered for a passkey, received it, entered it in your client, and completed about 10 jobs without error. (See posts #12 and #37.)

PS, I've got two 1080Ti running myself now and throttled them to 220 W (from 250 W default) as a compromise between energy-efficiency and speed. 200 or 180 W should still be OK for this size of GPU too, i.e. down to 70% of the default. 50% power limit like you applied sounds somewhat low.

Thx @StefanR5R
it seems I misinterpreted PPD as performance gauge while it is really an incentive for some. So I do not really care about the points but just wanted to ensure the system works efficiently and resources contributing are fully utilized for the cause. I was under the impression (from installation dialogs?) that the passkey does not matter that much, which was inaccurate. PPD up now to 278K, probably the actual computing performance did not change whatsoever.

GPU came from mining. its original fans failed, cooling improvised and limited hence to 50%.

Additionally you can of course check GPU utilization with a monitoring tool of your choice. Shader utilization should be very high, way above 90%. (Fluctuates though, more on Windows, less on Linux, due to how the driver stacks work.) VRAM occupation is usually very low, while VRAM bandwidth usage as well as PCIe bandwidth usage may be low to medium depending on the type of work and maybe stage within the work unit.

Edit, an absolute performance indicator for Folding@home would be TPF (time per fold). But its drawback is that it varies a lot from work unit to work unit on the same hardware, due to different complexity of the molecules analyzed.
