Yes. It has busted > 20 people in my CS class over the last semester and a half.

Sounds like a very interesting project too. It would be fun to see how it works, but that defeats the purpose of having it now doesn't it?

The internet is such a wide source for information nowadays...students can easily copy someone else's work. they should atleast make an effort to batch cheating.

They have a database of the papers used by many "pay for papers" companies..you know the companies that charge you $50 for a term paper.

It compares your submitted work with the database and if the congruence is too great then you get an F.

I haven't heard of anyone being falsely accused of plagiarism through this system, and it seems to work well.

IMO anyone too lazy or stupid to write their own papers deserves to flunk out of school and stop wasting money.

so am I ...

I think the reason in ur CS dept that many get caught bc they were copying left and right, and
when u complied you have the same error or watsoever, the grader of course gonna catch you right away

but come on, how many ppl get caught by copying paper, also , in cs, by changing the varaible and all that
Moss will still able to detect you cheating ? wtf that's just seem like total bs to me

until the day i got hit by moss, then I will be a belieiver

Wow, I didn't even know it could be used for regular papers. We use it in our CS class to test for similar programs. It will ignore variable names, expressions, and the like and will physically map out how our programs are executed and written. It sounds really awesome.

Our TAs always say that it's pointless to try and beat it. If you can copy a CS project and beat MOSS, you would already be able to do the project because it's a hell of a lot easier than fooling MOSS.

Papers can be searched for similar word usage, sentence structure, themes, topics, etc. Plenty of people in my Visual Basic course were also booted for cheating.

No, but we had a whole presentation about it in my CS seminar class. It was very interesting. I don't even think the TAs get to 'see' it work. Nobody does. It's closed source so nobody knows how to fool it; only the developers themselves.

Bah. It looks for word-for-word copying and what percentage of the total paper is word for word, etc.

Just rearrange the sentences, use multiple sources, etc. There's a way around everything in life! There are only so many ways to say "Darwinism is the best way to look at life", you know what I mean?

If you do a good job of mixing and matching copied phrases, you have a leg to stand on AFA arguing your "innocence" goes.

MOSS looks for people that copy programming assignments, not papers.

Is it really called MOSS? Is there another name for it? Google returns nothing similar.

yes it exists, yes it works ... just do your own work, you'll be glad during the technical section of your interview ... or you'll end up doing basic 'help desk' work with a CS degree ...

So its perfectly fine to "plagerize" my own paper, right? Technically I'm not cheating and the rules never stated I had to use all new material.
