My favorites are Ubuntu, Xubuntu, depends on the Hardware, Debian works good on aple PPC,Ubuntu Has everything one needs and best support, any mint flavor not so much support and brakes easy.
I've used OpenSuse and Ubuntu over last 10 or so years. I prefer OpenSuse slightly, mostly due to great KDE environment, pre-installed packages, and nice utilities that come with Yast.
For Windows coming to Linux, I would say Xubuntu/Lubuntu, Mint w/ 17, Zorin OS, and Solydx. Zorin OS will provide you the closest GUI feel IMHO, but I don't know if they have 14.04 release yet.
But the thing u need to understand is... This is not Windows. So, don't expect a distribution to behave like Windows, no matter what desktop environment you are using. If you come into this expecting things to behave and function like a NT box you will quickly crash and burn.
