I have been using Mozilla Thunderbird email client for several years on both Windows 7/10, Linux Mint and on Mac OS X and macOS. The beauty of this client is in its design making it incredibly easy to move your ch!t from one environment to another with little effort. You simply move the /Profile folder and assicated profil.ini file and that is it. I did this moving the wife's email back in 2010 from a Windows 7 PC to a 27" iMac. I then recently bought her a Surface Pro 7 (SP7) for household financials and copied the same two items from the 2010 iMac to the SP7. But I had some extreme trouble re-using a B-stock 2015 iMac this past October. I managed to nuke and pave and freshly install the macOs via Internet. I installed M$ Office 2011, Lightroom, Google Chrome and Firefox browsers, and finally Thunderbird. It was with Thunderbird that I hit an unexpected wall.
Launching the app works just fine, but I would continually get this error message saying the server refused the connection. I got to a point that I deleted the app and reinstalled it without migrating the /Profile folder and profile.ini file and just manually created a mailbox of an existing mailbox and still I got the same exact error message. I was about to give up and then at 3AM this morning thought to check that since '1 and 1' hosting service got bought out by IONOS that maybe on the mac they required the use of IMAP accounts instead of pop3. I Googled such an inquiry and the first link led me to someone posting on a Mozilla help forum with the exact damn issue.
She had been using Thunderbird on her mac for years and then suddenly last September of 2019 it stopped working and they were getting the same exact error message. Twenty replies of which the first 16 didn't help led to the poster to call Apple support and it turned out the something was setting up a proxy server. They were directed to go under System Preference, Advance, Proxy and uncheck anything that was checked. They found SOCKS proxy had been checked, which they unchecked it and Thunderbird started working again. I tried this solution and it worked. Happy, I shut down the mac and went to bed. only to wake up this morning to the problem came back and again SOCKs was checked.
I will have to wait until this afternoon to do some testing to see if it is Thunderbird doing this or if it is the macOS doing it, or maybe just some other app doing it when the iMac is booted. But it is annoying. Anyone know if Thunderbird sets up a proxy upon launch?
