Pentathlon 2015

Once again, SETI.Germany invites all BOINC teams to the BOINC Pentathlon. For the sixth time, the winner is battled out in five disciplines at five projects between May 5 and May 19.

After the introduction of Marathon and Sprint in the last couple of years, there will be a new discipline in this year, again. Details will be announced prior to the beginning of the Pentathlon, for now I can reveal that it will run for at least five days at a CPU project.

Each team that wants to participate has to sign up using the registration form at http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/anmeldung.php until April 27. The teams may suggest one GPU project and three CPU projects, please see this page for details.

Last year we tied with BOINCstats for 16th and 17th places.

Yeah, this would mean we would have to interrupt the Formula-BOINC race - which would be OK with me ... but what about the standing of the TeAm?
Opinions?

I think last year there was overlap with a PrimeGrid race. Not so this year. :thumbsup:

In the Pentathlon or in Formula-BOINC?

I don't see a problem with the occasional setting back of the Formula BOINC TeAm races. We might even get to add points to some of our winning projects. We should certainly suggest what WE want to run, if we chose to participate.

Or we could modify the rules of our own TeAm race, making these 15 days and five(?) projects part of OUR race too.

By then maybe Fred with have his new rig up and running, if his PSU ever comes in.

There are some heavy hitters that played last year, but if we participate this year I'm sure we could place far better.

It's intriguing that some projects will run at the same time, and yet...sounds tricky.

I'll always vote for PrimeGrid.

I tend to like EdGES because I now have a script (see other race thread) that gives anyone here with Linux an advantage. They probably couldn't keep up with the full Pentathlon contingent, though.

We would need points in the Formula-BOINC projects, such as NFS@Home or Universe@Home, but then the other teams would gain a lot too!

OK, cross-referencing your list of active projects where we don't have Formula-BOINC credit with my list of projects that have gotten votes before (and are therefore more likely to win), I get:

The only application where we might get a Formula-BOINC benefit (or loss) is NFS@Home.

Aside from WCG, I either haven't tried those projects at all, or haven't tried them in a long time. :hmm:

Vote for something that is not likely to run out of WUs. It was annoying last year to not get POEM WUs!

And what projects would that be (except the big ones, like seti@home, rosetta, etc.)?

I think Einstein would be good because it does OK on both AMD and Nvidia and has WUs.
How does AMD do on PrimeGrid and Seti? They always have WUs.

For CPU projects, I see WCG as the only qualifying big one.
Other projects that usually have lots of WUs:
Asteroids
Cosmology
Malaria Control
Yoyo
NFS
NumberFields
SRBase - surprise for a newer one!

Wow! Surprisingly short list, no wonder I've been struggling to get WUs in well paying projects that I want to move to new Milestones.

Well from those lists I have the following proposal:

GPU: Einstein@Home (will not affect our Formula-BOINC-standing, we are #21)

CPU: Cosmology, SRBase and MalariaControl
(in none of these the race would hurt us in Formula-BOINC and we can climb a step or two ... also MalariaControl is a worthy project from any point of view).
