I've got an HP with an intel850 chipset using PC600 RDRAM. I believe its non-ECC.

What RDRAM can I use to upgrade this thing? 800? And what is all this 800-45 vs 800-40 stuff I see? This is the first time I've been blessed enough to come across a machine with t3h Rambus.

I know this junk is expensive, so if I cant find something anything cheap, ill just sell the system with 256MB.

Edit: Can speeds be mixed in a system? What about ECC/non-ECC?

Thanks.

Honestly, you'll pay way too much at this point for any RDRAM...just chunk the system and replace it if it's too slow for you.

As for your questions, I really doubt that you can mix speeds, but I'm not sure.

You are better off not mixing speeds with rambus,

and You'll be better off getting rid of that machine and buying a new one.

Yeah, it's not really worth upgrading. It's just too expensive to be worth it. You could pretty much upgrade to a new CPU, motherboard, and ram, for the price of a gig of RDRAM.

yeah, well my friend traded me the computer for an old ipod, and i was just going to throw linux on it for the guest bedroom. when he gave me the pc he told me it had 2x128MB PC800 and i planned on parting out the system, and then i found out its 4x64 PC600. he just found out the ipod hdd is going bad so both of us are putting a lil bit of money into our stuff.

i worked out a trade in the fs/ft for 2x128 pc800 so ill see how it goes.

Q: Can I mix RIMM modules of different frequencies, or ECC/non-ECC into my system?

A: When mixing module frequency or error-correction code (ECC), most RDRAM systems will default to lowest frequency among the inserted modules. In addition, if any of the modules do not support ECC, then most system disables the ECC function.

the difference between 45ns and 40ns on 800mhz modules is the latency.

essentially a 40ns is rated at a slightly higher speed, but since latency can only be reduced on RDRAM by increasing the clockspeed at 800mhz they will perform identically.

Mixing modules of different latencies doesnt matter at all on RDRAM.

I highly reccomend getting an I875 motherboard and DDR over getting more RDRAM.
