The first teardown is in. He doesn't directly address the frame material, but it looks like it may actually be a solid titanium unibody to me. Definitely does not appear to be aluminum inside.

I looked at the trade-in offers but nothing is compelling me to get the S24. My primary phone currently are my personal Flip-5 for everyday use, my S22 Ultra when I go out somewhere where I want to take good photos as the camera on the flip 5 suck. And for work I use a Pixel 8 pro for network admin stuff and for fine detail pics of network cabling and macro close up stuff as the pixel 8 pro has a great macro zoom lens.

Mine is also arriving Friday. I already only charge the s23U once every other day and it looks like the 24 ultra will last longer. Also mostly interested in the flat screen and camera too.

The s24 ultra 512gb (black), will be a nice upgrade from my s21 5G ultra 128gb (black). Specially for $299 after Verizon's $1000 trade in.

How did you that trade-in value? We have the same phone. The base price is $1419.99 and with $120 trade-in it's $1299.99

Getting $183.00 now, not $1,000. I would love to see a screen shot that assigns a trade-in value of $1,000 to Galaxy S 21 Ultra 5G.

You get $1000 for the trade in of any qualified Samsung phone. (You have to indicate you have a trade in, and go thru those steps) the $120 is the 24 ultra discount, not your trade in amount.

S23U will get a bunch of the AI features in a future update anyway. Regardless, it's basically a perfect phone and I'll probably hang onto it through the last OS update unless they roll out some groundbreaking new feature.

@Justinus gave you the info above.

It appears you are trying to check your trade in value of your S21 Ultra 5G under your phone that says "check trade in value" without starting the pre-order process for the s24 ultra. That will show $183, as it's giving you the trade in value of the S21 Ultra 5G, for purchasing ANY new phone, not the S24 Ultra pre-order. To get the $1000 trade in, you have to pre-order the s24 ultra (0r at least start the steps), and then in the process of doing so, you click on trade in, and during the pre-order process, it will ask you what phone you are trading in, and that is when it will give you the $1000 trade in. It's ONLY good for the S24 ultra preorder, thru the 30th of this month, and it's credited over 36 months, and it also required the unlimited ultimate plan. I do believe you can start the pre-order of the s24 ultra, and after you choose which color/storage size you want, it gives you the option to check "trade in" or "no trade in" and right above those options it gives you a place you can "check if your phone qualifies" or something like that, and shows you the $1000 trade in value. The pre-order process doesn't ask you which phone you are trading in until you click continue at the bottom of the first page of the s24 ultra pre-order.

It also appears that if you already have the "Unlimited Ultimate" plan, you are not eligible for the upgade. The sequenece of screens seems to be intentionally confusing.

I've got to say I am disappointed with how grainy the display is. It reminds me of my LG V30. All 3 phones I had previously were samsung or using samsung displays and had silky smooth colors with no grain.

Some people trying to blame the antireflective coating, but it's not a standard matte antireflective treatment that would cause this. Also it becomes extremely apparent at low brightness settings when solid black is plagued with many bright spots, looking like a dark photo from a noisy camera sensor.

There are reports of S24 and S24+ having the same issue, which dont have the antireflecting coating. Heres hoping its just a firmware issue with these new panels and it will be fixed with an update.

A thread on Reddit discussing it.

The displays are exhibiting a more natural hue compared to the previous models. There is mention of a software update coming out after full release according to the threads on Reddit where this is being discussed.

Got it Friday after work and I set it up. I chose a manual setup, I don't copy anything from my old phone as I view it as a time to go through and actually install only the apps I really use once again etc. kind of like building a new PC, I like to start fresh.

Getting an nvme USB-C flash drive was one of my better recent purchases, taking my photos off my old phone and putting into the new one is lightening fast. Installing all of the new apps and setting it up took maybe an hour sitting on the couch while watching a movie the wife picked anyway.

Sunday I took both the S24 Ultra and my S23 Ultra outside and shot a series of photos with each camera. Side by side I was hard pressed to tell any differences to be honest, I was especially concerned about the new zoom camera. Battery life I could not tell any difference in the way I use a phone, however I used it a lot over the weekend, but then again I charged it overnight. I should let it drain down to almost empty and see.

I got a case, screen protector, and a set of Buds SE with the $150 credit. The case I don't like, it is cut out for each individual camera, I prefer a camera lens protector so I ordered a case with the camera area cut out to allow a protector to fit. I bought a pack of glass screen protectors with the camera lens protectors, I prefer the glass to the softer flexible ones that I got from Samsung. Interestingly the case from Samsung looks really rough inside with obvious splay of the molded part, but the outside is decent enough.

I take my phone running with me almost every day, so it may be subject to sweat, rain, and constant bouncing. I do ultramarathons that can last as much as 40 hours, and they want you to leave your phone on so you can receive text messages, so battery life without carrying a charger and portable battery is nice. I do put the phone in a doggie poop bag to protect it while it's in my pocket if I can, since most Ziplocs that it fits in aren't comfortable in a thigh pocket. The S23 Ultra and my Note 20 Ultra before that both were fine so I expect this one will be too. I also do epic runs and races, and often stop to take photos during the run.

I have the light blue model in 512gb and the blue is very subtle, it's covered by a case anyway. The titanium sides and flat screen are much nicer in the hand without a case, and still better even in a case. I have big hands, so I'm used to using it one handed a lot. The S23 with it's rounded edge screen always felt weird, and the cases always seemed like they were a compromise to cover enough screen yet stay on. It does feel a bit bigger when shoving it into a pocket because of this also, but the case I have is not slippery but tacky which may contribute.

Using the phone and playing with the new features was interesting. I probably don't use as many features of a phone as many do as I just want a good camera. But the circle to search worked well. The fingerprint sensor still sux, especially though the flexible screen protector. The thing I actually had fun with the most was playing with the AI generative wallpaper creator. It lets you generate images based on certain keywords, but it has a limited selection of keywords, you can't freely select any free selection you want. The results are interesting.

I did not notice any display issues, some are complaining of graininess, I did not see that. Side by side with the old S23 they looked comparable, the new display in the S24 I can only describe as more "pastel-like maybe? Not an issue to use during a daylight run with the sun out and the snow causing a bit brighter than normal day with lots of reflections.

I'm still playing with the thing, I do not watch many movies on my phone and I have not installed any games yet except Mighty Doom which looks and plays fabulous. Sound is something cell phones just don't do well with their tiny speakers, but my BT Jaybird Vista 2's paired and worked well.

That's my initial impressions. If you have an S23 Ultra I see no reason to upgrade unless you simply want to. If you really need a phone and yours older I suspect you'd think it was a huge upgrade.

If it's like the S23 ultra, you can buy an old phone off ebay and still get the $1000 credit, then sell your old phone separately. It doesn't have to be your existing phone. Check the specific model on the carrier website before buying. I got a $30 S7, traded that in and then sold my old S10+ for another $160. I think it only works with the carrier plans, Samsung's own discounts are not that good.

Thr anti-reflective property of the Gorilla Glass Armor in the S24U is a game changer

I sent my S23 Ultra in yesterday. I set the S23 and S24 side by side and compared apps and the display etc. making sure I did not miss anything. The S23 Ultra is a more vivid display, for the same brightness settings. Apparently Samsung has been toning down the garish colors to try and meet a more realistic color profile. Using the S24 for a few days I got used to it, and didn't notice is actually until they were side by side. I run the brightness on the S24 a bit higher, and have every display enhancement turned off.

I put my S23 case on the S24 and it fit, the edges are slightly off because of the flat edge versus curved. I have a new case for the S24 and I prefer the type with a cutout for the camera protector versus the original free one from Samsung that only has each camera cut out.

I wonder if this issue will be fixed with software or if it really is hardware. Mine exhibits this slightly but I'm not sure if I should try to get a replacement yet.

I am not sure if it's a bug at all. It's not faulty hardware, and it may not be software. As you zoom in, it's cycling thru the cameras. I suspect each camera is calibrated and aimed relevent to it's location on the back of the phone, to it's optimal focul point, based on the optical specification of the lense so it can be used to view images in it's optimal range. Because of the different lense specifications, the optimal focal point is not the same, and we know that each camera sits in a different spot on the back of the phone, so when it changes cameras, it's slightly shifts the focal point on the object being viewed. Short of using only one camera and zooming in digitaly, I am not sure if it's possible to fully remove shifting when cycling thru different cameras as it does, even if the camera lenses have the ability to rotate left/right/up/down, the physical location of each camera being different will cause a shifting effect because of the difference in viewing angle of the camera which effects the image. That's my logical interpretation of what is happening, but I could be off base.

If you have a s24 ultra, you can test this, put a box up, then put another box with a symbol on it, behind the first box, and offset it to the right so you can see the symbol (I used an amazon box). aim the camera at the top box's right edge, start at .6, and then start zooming in. (use the slider, not the number points) when the image shifts, which is when it's switching to a different camera, you will notice that you now see more of the back box between the symbol and the front box, or less of it, depending on which camera is being used for that zoom level.

Great video. He does a teardown of S24 Ultra and then an analysis of the Titanium frame.

Coming from s9 plus. So this is great for me. Firdt time buying a brand phone that wasn't a last yrs model.
The only reason I did it is because amazon was giving a free memory upgrade from 246 to 512. Amd a promo of $200. And there was also wanting to upgrade for no reason. The s9 is still working well. The battery life isn't as good as it used to be.
But in hindsight, I don't think I would have bought it. I missed it when I read the info out of the promo. This means I had to use it by June of 2024. They should just let u save it if u want to. I was thinking of maybe upgrading in 2 yrs or so by saving up the $200 e gift card and using my amazon credit. But I guess amazon didn't want u to do that, which sucks.
Oh, well. It's a huge upgrade for me. I definitely prefer the flat screen orver the curve.

It's a pretty great contrast how absolutely fantastic my experience has been with the pixel 8 pro, The launch of Google's Gemini AI assistant thing is absolutely a joke.

It can't do basic things that Google Assistant can do right now. Quickly uninstalled, can't believe they even launched it.

They thought that adding AI will make people buy the new phone, but in essence nobody is ready to pay full price for a cool feature, because in rest there is not difference at all.

The update for vividness is here. It enables a 3 position slider under the display-screen mode-advanced settings. Basically it's S24, S23, then S22 levels of vividness. The update also includes camera image quality and sharpness updates.

I set my display to the S23 setting and it's barely noticeable to my eyes, somewhat noticeable under the S22 setting.

I upgraded from the S9+ to the S21 ultra 2 years ago. IMO, the new phone is OK, but for me, only marginally "better." I don"t see myself upgrading again for at least another year...maybe 2...and I'm STILL considering making the switch to Apple. I've only ever owned Samsung smart phones...starting with the S3 and upgrading every 2 years or so. I would have made the change last time, but Verizon pulled the $800 trade-in on the Apple phone the day before I wanted to upgrade...then put it back on 2 weeks later. Oh well...I can still make calls...and the S21 Ultra camera isn't terrible...better than the S9+ for certain.
