SDHC + Card Reader = Painful Thumb...

i recently purchased a new camera, the Canon Powershot SD 1000 and loving it... it is good for what i do, basically a nice camera, that dont take up much bag space (i travel a lot)

in addition, i purchased the 8GB SDHC card... bigger = better, right?

well, it seems that my systems dont like it when i plug in a SDHC or a ULTRAII SD card into the cardreader.... the system basically freezes up.

i am loving the higher capacity, i take more pics of my kids, longer videos... but once downloading it to my PC, deleting the files on the camera makes my thumb sore...

anyone got better ways? thoughts?

Make sure you have a SDHC compatible card reader for starters. Secondly you shouldn't be deleting images on your camera, you should use the format function.

ok, so formatting the SDHC from the camera will remove everything... well, i am sure this is a better solution...

as for the SDHC compatible card readers, well, my card reader was purchased while back...

i guess i have to replace it or is there another way?

You'll have to replace it. I bought a Scythe card reader off ebay since it was one of very few I could find that specified SDHC and was black.

Yeah, i discovered my new SDHC card doesn't work in my Dell LCD's card reader, my notebook's card reader, or my external card reader.

So i have to use teh USB cable for now till i get a card reader that will take them...

BTW, why can't you just delete the files through the PC?

As in, browse the memory card thru the camera, & then delete what you don't want?

He can't since his card reader cannot read the cards. You shouldn't do the 1 pic at a time thing unless you have no where else to put images. And you should always use the format function on the camera that you are using the card in ... the sad thing is the discussion I read that in is so old I don't remember why. It was on DPReview however, so you might be able to find similar discussions. I've always done it and it's never been a hassle so no reason for me not to.

Formatting the card rather than removing pics 1 at a time is similar to defragging your HDD, you'll get more consistent performance.

He was saying that the OP should have hooked up his camera (via USB presumably), put the camera in USB storage mode, and deleted the pictures that way.

Exactly, & since using teh USB cable was how he got the pics on his PC in the first place...that's why i'm confused.

for some reason, when i do it, my camera remains inactive after a while and only to see that none was deleted...

perhaps i am not being as patient as i should be but eh...
