First rumours for RDNA3 are here so new thread time!

Interesting, didn't know AMD is selling 7900GRE in Europe with similar price as 4070...

BTW, I am thinking the reason AMD is not selling such product across all other countries is because AMD might drop the prices of 7900XT/XTX very soon...

One country doesn't mean Europe. Here (also Europe) the 4070 is basically same price as the 7800 XT plus the 4070 is actually available. So a 7900GRE would cost clearly more than a 4070. But AMD has a history here of being less budegty than in other places (or NV not as expensive comparatively) .

It could also be bought in Slovakia, but only a single XFX model for €733.30.
Price is higher than both 7800XT and 4070, unless you choose the most expensive models.

As expected, AMD only launched mobile N31 with 16GB @ 180W TDP. There is no sight of mobile N32, make you wonder why didn't AMD just launch mobile version of N32? That would cover both 12GB and 16GB versions with lower power TDP....

OEMs aren't interested?

The Alienware looks like a one off - it's not configurable like the standard m18 is. AMD may have simply just sold whatever N31 only has 72 CUs working to Dell, and that's what Dell decided to put it in.

Navi 31 @72CU at lower clocks may be a lot more energy efficient that Navi 32 @ 60CU at higher clocks. More so if those 72CU out of 96CU max were binned to be extra efficient.
Wide and slower is a viable mobile strategy.

I hope you are not serious, 200mm2 and 300mm2 die size difference, not to mention amount of MCD. And slower bin could act as 12GB version which is more power efficient...

I never said that AMD would be happy to have only Navi 31 to sell for mobile, but RDNA3's poor perf/watt compared to the competition -and what we might have expected from RDNA2 ported to 5nm - may have left them no choice.

7900GRE is at worst tied but usually faster than the 7800XT in each game and pulls less power. It also pulls about the same power as the 7700XT.

Wider and slower often gives better perf/w. Can see the same with 6750XT Vs 6800 in other reviews.

Would have thought with a 300mm2 big die AMD would have just gone back to aligning desktop & laptop parts, with the laptop part being heavily downclocked but maintaining the core layout of the desktop version (maybe fewer MCDs to RAM to keep baseline power down).

Weird to see AMD punt on the laptop front again, but if no one is buying what they're selling *shrugs*.

More like a combination of risk mitigation and guidance from US gov. I don't want to turn this into a discussion on politics, so I'll just mention one recent example, Intel and their driver team originally located in Russia. The war started, and Alchemist schedule suffered as a consequence. You can probably extrapolate on why a big China located dev team is a considerable risk factor for the future, even if the situation isn't completely similar with the Russia scenario.

Overall I think AMD is doubling down on their GPU efforts, just not in the consumer graphics sector. I'm sure the China team could have tackled compute just as well, if not better.

I don't care about the reason, but If those rumored layoffs are also affecting a significant number of the driver team located in China, then It's worrying If nothing else.
Making another competent driver team will take some time.
I probably should forget about dual-issue being usable in the near future.

I think it has more to do with US/China competition than RDNA3 disappointment. Maybe AMD will build a new team in India or Vietnam.

Ah so it's just talks so far. I thought maybe Vietnam had a significant base of very employable and accomplished techies I had never heard of.

The layoffs make sense when you see most of the biggest tech companies are doing layoffs with healthier financials than AMD and AMD current headcount and cashflow.

AMD headcount exploded in 2022 with 25k employees. A 61% increase in employees vs 2021. This is near Nvidia levels.

This matched a similar explosion in revenue in 2022.

However, look at 2023 numbers and you will see a significant slow down.

Revenue has been down and cannot maintain current spending. Net income has been brutal for AMD the last 9 months with losses for 2 of the last 3 quarters.

So to mitigate risk and economic uncertainty, a headcount reduction on probably the least profitable division at AMD makes sense.

I doubt it has anything to really do with politics as this is too small of a move to really matter. China is also at the forefront of fresh engineering talent with 5(including the top spot) and arguably 6th of the top engineering schools in the world. The US is only in two of these spots in the top 10. It will be harder to get cheaper and better talent than China.

AMD is just like the rest of the tech industry in 2023(besides Nvidia) that is implementing cost saving measure as a result of shrinking revenue and lack of growth.
