Look, I get it, we are a consumer culture, where technology obsolescence is very dominant and no one really gives a damn. Having said that, I cannot think of a single game, in the Xbox One generation of consoles, that would single handedly, and instantly, declare a console obsolete. Maybe I'm not enough of a console gamer to truly know and understand if there were such cases in the past, but I really cannot think of one.

Here's my problem.. Look, every game that was ever made for Xbox One could literally run on every single Xbox console, from the very first original Xbox One to Series X. Sure, it could run very poorly, maybe at 30fps with various issues, but it would run. Every.. Single.. game that was ever released for the Xbox One generation consoles.

Now all of a sudden, Starfield comes along and here, they are saying you absolutely HAVE to upgrade, if you want to run it natively, to a Series S or X. Come on.. That's ridiculous. An old Xbox One X can run every single Xbox One game out there @ 4k. A few will do 60fps, most will do 30, but they'll run! Not Starfield...

What makes it so damn special? Its not even the graphics. Its the damn SSD requirement. Somehow Micocrap chose to ignore the fact that an Xbox One X can easily be upgraded from an HDD to an SSD. But no... Not good enough! Not because an older console cant run this, but because they decided to impose this artificial block to force people to spend more money.

You may argue that a 2.5" SSD is "not fast enough", but that's BS. Starfield runs fine in my PC on a 5 year old 2.5" SSD. No need for an NVME stick!

So there we have it. Is it my fault for being frugal and sticking to an older console which easily runs 99.9% of all Xbox games still, or does the fault lie with an extremely poorly optimized game, where those in charge decided to impose artificial restrictions to milk people for money? I guess that's a rhetorical question.

It's really not so much that I cant play Starfield on my Xbox that pisses me off. Its the fact that other people try to dictate the exact time, at which I should spend more money.

Microsoft flat out said, before Xbox Series X/S came out, that they would be supporting the Xbox One console for 18-24 months after the X/S were released.

Well it's been about 33 months now so they are no longer worrying about supporting old obsolete consoles.

And I'm glad. I'm tired of worrying about last gen crap holding them back from pushing the limits of the current consoles. And I'm not finger pointing only at Xbox - Sony is doing the same exact thing with the PS5.

The sooner they can stop worrying about decade old consoles the sooner they will come remotely close to actually hitting their claims of this being the "4k60" gen (which is LOL and we will never even be close to that this gen).

WTH are you talking about? There is no SSD upgrade for Xbox One. You would need to support it on the slow HDD. On that 10 year old crap Jaguar CPU.

Please check online. You will see than an Xbox One X can easily be upgraded to an SSD. Also, the graphics in One X can run most everything at 4k so surely it could do Starfield at 1080p 30fps if they REALLY wanted to.

Consoles don't work like PCs. There is no official ssd upgrade for xbox one, therefor anything released for Xbox One must be supported on the HDD. Also, anything released for One X must also be supported on the base One. Either play on PC, cloud stream to your One X or buy a series console.

LOL the Xbox Series X and PS5 can't even run everything at 4k30, you're insane if you think Xbox One X can run "most everything" in 4k.

you're making some very bold claims my friend. Care to show me exactly which game does not run @ 4k 30fps at least?

On Xbox One X? Basically anything.

On Xbox Series X, the latest big game Starfield can't even do 4k @ 30fps.

Elden Ring is another one that couldn't get there.

Cyberpunk another.

EDIT:

We aren't even close to 4k60 on the current gen consoles with all the latest buzzwords like ray tracing and HDR.

ehhh. 'Xbox One generation of consoles' time came and went, some time ago.. effectively ended with release of the 'Series X' which themselves are two years old at this point and old 'Ryzen 2' chips. What does it have to do with game released in 2023??

I tried Starfield and thought it is 'a lot of promise, check in a year' type of game as all Skyrim like games are. buggy, barely complete, not optimized, however plenty of mechanics to play with a lots of promise. A lot I can fault Starfield for, not running on ancient CPUs is not one of them..

Easily upgrading to an SSD... lol, no. The PS3 and 4 were *trivial* to upgrade. Hard drive out, SSD in, boot, enjoy.

I had to do all sorts of partitioning and spent loads and loads of time (hours) upgrading a One to an SSD and it was worth it... at the time.

And yeah, the Jaguar support is done. Finally. This is a good thing for all PC, xbox and PS gamers going forward as we'll better experiences now.
