Solved! Strange problem on rebooting, getting hangs...

Hi all,

I have a i9-12900K, on a PRIME Z790-V WIFI board that basically only runs Unraid as a NAS. I have two drives attached to it, Seagate Exo 18s, and an SSD, a Sabrent rocket. Unraid boots off of a simple Sandisk 64GB USB drive.

The server is rock solid when it's on, no issues, no stuttering, does all the work I ask of it. However on the infrequent basis that I have to reboot it, it will hang at the BIOS (or just before). I get a flash of the BIOS screen and then it goes black. If I hold down the delete key, then I get the "press f2/delete for the BIOS". If I push nothing, it doesn't present itself.

I have to power down and hold down the delete key, to get INTO the bios, then save, then reboot again and it will finally launch the OS. I updated the BIOS to the latest version to rule anything out there, and I have zero stability issues. It only presents itself when I reboot.

Any thoughts? Not sure if there's a BIOS setting that might help?

I've seen RAM cause this issue. I've also seen Fast Boot (BIOS & Windows' power settings) also cause this issue.

You could try loading optimized default settings in the BIOS. You can also try using one RAM stick at a time to see if that solves the issue.

Disabling XMP is also worth a shot.

Yep, disabled and now my reboots are without any issue.

It's one of the first things I disable on every build / OS install.

That's an awful lot of horsepower for an unRAID server with only 2 disks. What do you use this unRAID server for exactly? You said an NAS?

It's my Plex server and I upgraded since I got a deal from Microcenter on the Mobo/CPU/Ram. Since I regularly transcode things for people having the native Intel Quick Sync removed the need for having a native GPU and my transcoding and everything is silky smooth now. Before it was not, and so I'm happy I upgraded. My old PC was a very old Ryzen and was struggling quite a bit.

It's not just Plex either, also I have my regular NAS, bunch of other docker containers, PiHole, etc.
