The joys of being retired

I hate to use the R word, but I have not worked in a year and have no plans to go back to work.

I just loaded all 14,500 pictures from my phone to Amazon photos. I am now going through the photos on Amazon photos and deleting any photos that don't need to be there (Pictures of credit cards or other stupid pictures I have taken). I told myself that I am doing something today and being productive. In reality I am not doing a damn thing, and loving it.

I wish I didn't have to work, but my landlord doesn't take wishes for payment, and my spouse's med school is not cheap (at least there is only one more year). One day, she'll be making that sweet doctor money.

Glad you're enjoying your time though! Good to have stuff to do in retirement.

I'd rather be able to work, than be retired.

You can "retire" and still work. Maybe at a different type of job...just to keep you busy, not because you "have to work."

Sometimes I get bored and think about going to work someplace...either a retail job like Home Depot, or even a customer service type of job, such as the local cable or electrical utility...

Then, common sense kicks in..."Nah, fuck that nonsense...WTF were you thinking?"

I'm currently restorating about 3k old dias, and giving them to my parents for their upcoming birthday.

Hopefully with the doctor money you two can retire early. Or she will be like my neighbor who is a doctor and just can't stop working. No thanks.

 man…why you harshing my mellow so early on a Saturday?

(because when you’re retired, EVERY DAY IS SATURDAY!)
My wife and I have a thing where we will point to the other and say "Quick, what day it is?" There is always a pause of at least 20 seconds before the other one can figure it out.

That is great! We like to post our vacation pictures on our walls, but have not really been able to do that lately because I have problem transferring photos from my phone to the computer. Now I can do that and start printing the pictures.

We also do a thing where once a month one of us picks something to do (like a date.) Now I can post the pictures of our dates on the walls.

Perhaps - the dream to be a stay at home lump. Residency is at least 4 years, so the minimum time needed before becoming an attending and making the real money.

At least I make good money for what I do, and it isn't an overtime-type job, so that helps. I'm basically 14 years into my career: the first half spent getting a PhD and doing basic research, the second half working in private industry.

Get a bunch of cats and spend your time making little amusement parks for them - cat walks along the ceiling with decorated holes in the walls from one room to the other, little kitty slides and ramps, window perches where they can watch the birds and bunnies and squirrels, oh my.

Then, you can sit back, watch them and think 'I'm a cat too.'

Disability isn't retirement.
Well...that's true enough...except my doctors said, "these are "retirement injuries. You're done working." , so I applied for SSDI and my disability pension...which both converted to "regular retirement" at age 65...

I'm in my early 40s and down to part time on WFH. My spouse is high earning but I have my own resources through a combination of luck and not fucking up anything too badly. The prospect of not working at all is on the medium term horizon, which is a bit weird since I've always had a job (and sometimes two) since I was 15.

Been retired for about 3.5 years. Work around the house and yard keeps me busy. Pressure washing roof gutters and driveway now.
There is always something to do.

I wish I could still work, unfortunately cancer makes retirement a bit of a drag lol 😂
Our autistic son is still with us, and always will be with us. He is very similar to RainMan. So while we may be retired, we are not empty nesters. With all the good and bad that entails. Hopefully you are at least an empty nester.
