I want to upgrade my video card and the RX 590 that I got does not seem to work. I don't know if it's the board or if the card doesn't work. If I have to get a new card I want something I can use now but also use when I upgrade my MB/CPU.

It should be fine; the board has an UEFI bios. I used an RDNA2 RX 6600XT in the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 with an FX 8350 no issues.

It should work, so if it's not something is either broken or configured wrong. You can always try clearing CMOS on the board, and are you sure you have appropriate power for the card?

That being said, even with an RX590 you're going to be pretty heavily CPU limited with an FX CPU in a lot of games. Unless you're absolutely sure that the card is the problem you'd be better off spending the money you would on 5700XT on a new MB+CPU. You could pick up a board and an i7 Haswell chip and keep your ram quite cheap, or for not much more you could get a full used MB+CPU+DDR4 combo and have a night and day difference. Wouldn't normally suggest someone spend a bunch of money without more details, but if you're looking at upgrading to a 5700XT anyway, it'd be kinda wasted on the FX.

Try updating the BIOS, one of the older updates is saying "3. Fixed Nvidia GTX 680 hang when runing with UEFI driver.". It was a somewhat occuring problem back when the UEFI cards were released and some kind of BIOS incompatibility caused issues for both the traditional BIOS and the new UEFI motherboards

Sometimes you also need to try activating CSM and forcing UEFI or Legacy BIOS.

I have a modular 1000W PS. The RX590 takes a 6 and 8 pin. The fans spin up and the lights come on when I boot up but I get no video signal. I have it set to legacy boot. I built the system in 2014 with a pair of 7970 and every game I've checked is GPU limited. I'm aware of the limitations of the FX but I don't have the time at the moment for a full upgrade. I just want to update the video card with something that would be useful when I do get around to upgrading.

Do you get a video signal if you swap back in a 7970?

Any specific BIOS settings I need to enable? Since I would have to change the settings and then switch the cards and then back if it doesn't work.

Yes the 7970 works fine. I updated the video drivers to the most recent and everything is working fine. I even got about a 10-20% boast in frame rate.

Did you buy the RX 590 used? It could just be a dead card, though if you can, I would try testing it in another, hopefully more modern computer, for confirmation.

Yes I got is used from Newegg so wasn't worried about shady vendors but it could be a dead card. I could try it in my new build though I hate pulling that apart. Getting a new card wouldn't kill me money wise but it would be really annoying if they shipped me a dead card. If I do have to get a new card then the question would be what to get that I can use in the current board and would work with a new build that would be an AM4 board with a 5900X. RX 6700XT?

An MSI 970 gaming + FX 8350 + RX 470 4GB with a Samsung monitor that supported Freesync over HDMI, was my main setup back before Ryzen came out. Polaris and Freesync breathed new life into FX at the time. Which makes me think that old 590 is probably a ragged out mining slave.

It might be worth testing in another system if you will get hit with a restocking fee or something. If it was covered by the hassle free, I'd send it back untested. Newegg has an open box ASRock 6700xt for $240 and a couple of 6750s for $280.

Also, my bad, it was the XFX 6600 I used in the FX setup. https://www.3dmark.com/nr/684355

ASROCK and Sparkle A770 16GB is just $289 on Newegg. I would prefer the Sparkle coz it clocks higher and the cooling is better too. You get 4 GB extra VRAM and it's a pretty decent card.

I'm going to bit the bullet tonight and try it in my new build. I need to know if it works. If it is dead then I'll have to decide on what to replace it with. Not sure how high up the ladder I can go with the current board. An 6700XT would be good if it worked.

Was used FX8350 + GTX 1070ti similar board EVO, but R1.0(sold used R1.0 with more cost than R2.0). Worked very nice

I was concerned about getting a card that had been over used that's why I didn't get anything on ebay. The card was listed as sold by Newegg and was listed as used good condition. Really disappointed with Newegg. Looking at current prices it makes no sense to get another RX590. They are running about 150USD. They are probably worth half that. RX 5700XT's are just over 200. I'm looking at these two cards. Since your 6600 worked I assume the 6700XT will to. I already cleaned the old driver out and reinstalled the lastest drivers so just have to swap cards.

$30 gets you NIB, so may as well. I prefer 3fan to 2fan, but the 2fan will fit in more cases. Personally I like the XFX 3 fan. I have had good experiences with their RDNA2 models. Both the 6600 and the 6800.

I have an IN WIN GRone so pretty much any card will fit. The XFX is the same price as the Sapphire so you think XFX>Sapphire?

I like 3 fan over 2 fan, thermals and noise tend to be better. That's the only reason I'd go XFX. I've had a fair number of cards from both vendors over the years and never had a problem with any of them.

I'd be damned tempted to take that ASRock 6750XT for $280 though. About 10% faster, and Newegg is backing it with the returns until the end of January. If something is janky you'd know well before then. I think you get the full manufacturer's warranty as well.

So ended up getting this card. The RX 6700XT was 299.99 and the RX 6800 was 379.99. The RX 6700XT didn't make sense since for just a few dollars more the 6800/6800XT are much faster cards. The downside is that the 6800XT draws more power and runs hotter than the 6800. I have everything I need to upgrade the FX8350 except a CPU and the time to do do it. I will be interested to see how much I can get out of the FX8350 until I get around to upgrading.

if you play the "just a little extra" game, better go for RX 7800XT.

I expect the performance difference between RX 7800XT and RX 6800XT to have some increase over time, as the newer RX 7800XT gets better optimizations. It uses the newer RDNA3, with some additions over RDNA2. Also it should draw less power than RX 6800XT.

This RX 7800XT is $520 right now:
Other models are at even lower price (down to $500).

The RX 6800XT from your link is $470 now. Did you got a lower price than that?
