I’ve watched my next door neighbor ( one of my black friends) go through 4Jettas and one Audi A6….in 11 years.

When one Jetta breaks beyond his skill to repair, he junks it and buys another. Biggest waste of money, but he loves ‘em.

Interestingly, the frequency of failures on them has allowed me to teach him some wrenching skills. Before we moved in, he knew really nothing…not even how to change oil. After a $100 oil change on his first Jetta, I showed how much oil and filter cost Asked me show him how to do it himself.

11 years later and he’s doing brakes, plugs and coils, power window repair….and more.

Gotta hand it to those Jettas..they encouraged learning repair skills in him.
I need to pull the engine, or at least subframe, in my 2008 S6 to replace the starter motor. Buying that car was a financially terrible idea. But hey, yolo 🥲
I've done a carbon clean, spark plugs, fuel injectors, coil packs, oil pan gasket, water pump and I should probably do the head gasket (and while I'm there, 1000 other things). Trying to avoid scope creep though

ivic is a tin can that is ultra reliable. It's like my ultra reliable Prius. I hate to drive it but it never lets me down. The Wolfsburg made GTI is an awesome car till it's broken. The Germans put Lucas electrical (Lucas the prince of darkness) to shame with their terrible products.

I remember my 1977 MGB had a Lucas electrical system in it. Constant issues with it.
Finally put in an Allison electronic ignition, and solved many of the breakdowns.
Man that was a fun car.

My first car was a 73 MGB with wire wheels and chrome bumpers. I had the lights turn off on an unlit road in the middle of the night in 1983. That was the end of that car. It was a very fun car.

I've heard some bad stories about Tesla's, as far as reliability goes. When they work, they're pretty good. But some of them just have problems constantly.

That's the one thing I like about Toyota's and Honda's, and their luxury equivalents. You can run most of them into the ground and they will still work.

Had a Corolla that never gave up… Probably most reliable car I ever owned - unlike the Fords Ive had.

There's a Tesla shop near one of the sites I work at that doesn't appear to be sales, just service and repair. It is always packed with cars. At times they run out of space and put them in the mall parking lot next door.

If Xwitter ever was a place to get the news faster, it no longer is. Now there is a LLM AI Chatbot called Grok, owned and developed by Elon Musk himself, and it makes news up, puts them in a “newly updated Explorer page” (that is, as I understand it, the new name for the trending news section curated by Twitter) and heralds those made up news as true. Yesterday Grok claimed that Iran had started bombarding Tel Aviv with missiles. Heavy Missiles, to be precise:

I wonder whether Twitter could be sued for damages if such made up news moves the markets in a significant way. Which seems totally possible to me. Even if an investor does not act on the made up news, because they have read the small print.

I give you Elon Musk, self-proclaimed free speech absolutist, savior of humanity from nuclear apocalypse, defender of mankind from the dangers of AI.

Coming soon, the combining of the trinity and the birth of Skynet: Grok unleashes a nuclear holocaust by becoming sentient and utilizing its free speech to create “news” in the NATO that Russian nukes are headed for DC, London and Paris, “news” in Russia that US, French and British nukes are headed for Moscow, “news” in Pakistan that Indian nukes are on the way to Islamabad, “news” in India that Pakistani nukes are on the way to New Delhi, and in China that everyone is sending nukes to Beijing. Hmm, I’d include North Korea but that would require a functioning electrical grid in Pyongyang.

Surprised by how far Honda is down the list. I'm a Toyota guy myself.

The old man used to have a Toyota Corolla back in the 90's and if it wasn't stolen, it'd probably still be drivable. The jury is out on the new hybrid Tundra's, but the old gas only models were tanks. Any time I borrow the old man's V8 Tundra, I could literally see the gas meter dropping, but they were damned reliable. My 14 year old Lexus RX450h is on 220k miles right now and still runs decent. I did have to replace the damn hybrid batteries, and the damn rats or squirrels that chewed through the wires in the engine bay, but other than that, it's been mostly routine stuff.

Thought about the V10 S6 before thinking probably not a great daily if I want something pretty reliable lol.
I've been pretty lucky with my B9 A4. Nothing has gone wrong so far besides wear and tear.

Mechanically they are solid. Intake flaps are a weak point, probably a long with said starter motor. No chain guide issues like the S4 V8 (though I should probably replace that if I'm doing an engine-out)

I have a 2012 VW Passat V6. 87000 miles on it.
Relatively trouble free. While under drive train warranty a valve spring broke and was fixed for free. The radio gave out and a door control unit died. I live at the ocean, so corrosion is an issue.

I also had to have the oil radiator for the heating system replaced a couple years ago.

It's a blast to drive. Fast and nimble. It's lowered with sport springs and bilstein shocks and chipped it's right around 300hp.

I regularly rent cars when we travel. I can't stand how Japanese and American cars feel compared to German cars. I always opt for BMW or Audi when traveling.

One exception are Jeep Wrangler 4 doors when we go skiing. Those are so fun off road and in deep snow.
