I regularly rent cars when we travel. I can't stand how Japanese and American cars feel compared to German cars. I always opt for BMW or Audi when traveling.

One exception are Jeep Wrangler 4 doors when we go skiing. Those are so fun off road and in deep snow.
In my case, I much prefer the interiors on German cars compared to Japanese and American.

I've heard some bad stories about Tesla's, as far as reliability goes. When they work, they're pretty good. But some of them just have problems constantly.

That's the one thing I like about Toyota's and Honda's, and their luxury equivalents. You can run most of them into the ground and they will still work.
My Tesla just passed 85,000 miles and had it's first real breakdown issue. The superbottle (the unified coolant valve / heat exchanger / pump system in the car for cabin / battery heating / cooling) failed. It imposed a low speed limit (50MPH), and I made an appointment in the app noting that I was going to come on in because I was 2 hours from home and didn't want to drive home at 50MPH. By the time I got there in about 20 minutes, they had already reviewed the diagnostics and figured out it was the superbottle that failed. They didn't have one. They gave me a newer loaner and said I could pick up the car in 2 days or whenever my schedule had me coming through again. They actually had the car done the next day. $1,400 for the repair.

Overall, for this to be the first breakdown, the failure was graceful, it still allowed me to drive the car, the built-in diagnostics made repair straightforward without worrying about them having to spend days diagnosing or throwing parts at the problem, and that has been a failure after 85,000 trouble free miles of basically just tire changes. I'm honestly pretty happy with how it's held up.

I have a 2012 VW Passat V6. 87000 miles on it.
Relatively trouble free. While under drive train warranty a valve spring broke and was fixed for free. The radio gave out and a door control unit died. I live at the ocean, so corrosion is an issue.

I also had to have the oil radiator for the heating system replaced a couple years ago.

It's a blast to drive. Fast and nimble. It's lowered with sport springs and bilstein shocks and chipped it's right around 300hp.

My 2015 Golf Sportwagen TDI has treated me well (knock on wood) in the last 4 years I've owned it, no problems yet. Dieselgate warranty on the drivetrain etc runs out next year, guess we'll see how it goes from there.
Got "upgraded" on my Camry rental a couple years ago to a Grand Cherokee and hated everything about it except the proximity indicators built into the side view mirrors. I actually liked my old '95 Grand Cherokee.

Give me a Honda element with better gas mileage or an Awd electric motor setup with 350 mile range and I’m good. I couldn’t care less about most of the electronic crap that comes with new cars now, especially big ass iPad like infotainment systems.🤮

It's been mentioned before, but:

I bet his browser history contains multiple felonies.

I actually wondered if the whole Twitter thing wasn't about him destroying evidence that could be used against him. At that time I didn't even know about his creepy ass philosophy about having as many kids as possible to spread his (self professed) superior genes. And he's been making weird pedophile comments/accusations for years (think it even predates the "pedo guy" comments about the cave diver).

Which ties into the entire QANON conspiracy theory that MAGA supporters love to talk about.

My F150 is the same year with a few more miles on it. The only repair was a defective water pump at 32k, repaired under warranty. The transmission is getting a bit tired from regularly towing a dump trailer, I was told that would happen.
It doesn't have any optional gadgets, so a lot of the minor failure points don't exist.

I’ve owned a few chevy’s, I have a hard time believing they’re that close to Toyota, lol

If you include the trucks, probably.
I rescind my statement. I've come to accept that my current work truck, a 2019 2500HD, is a piece of crap. My previous two 2500HDs were awesome, no repairs needed ever, just routine maintenance. This truck needed the transfer case rebuilt at 36,000 miles, the idler arm is worn out at 37.000 miles, the tires wear fast, the transmission sucks, and the jack tools that came from the factory don't fit the truck.

Jacks are just a joke now to make you feel secure. Join a car club. I had a flat in my driveway, and could not get the jack to line up on a secure spot. Called the service and the guy after removing all of the stud nuts had to pry the wheel off with a 2x4 it was so stictioned on.

A DC judge has granted a preliminary injunction against Texas AG Paxton's demand from Media Matters for documents related to its reporting on X and the placement of ads from major advertisers next to Neo Nazi posts on X.

“Plaintiffs’ reporting on matters of public concern are core First Amendment activities,” the judge wrote, asserting that Paxton was pursuing Media Matters with “retaliatory intent” over acts “with no apparent connection to Texas.”

The primary basis of Media Matters lawsuit against Paxton's investigation is that Media Matter has “no relevant connection to Texas,” explaining that it “does not transact any business in Texas and thus has never registered in the state” and similarly has “not registered as a charity organization in Texas.”

This atheist prays that there is still more good hearted level headed smart people in power is the US than there is of their antagonists.

The Empire strikes. Common sense strikes back.

So people that spent 15k on this vaporware can't transfer the license any more? The US needs some real consumer protections, changing terms after purchase should not be allowed.

Although it's hard to feel too bad for people falling for an obvious con.

Some lucky ones spent as little as $4k on FSD? (Can't remember the low water mark, their autonomous driving schemes have undergone many sales revisions.) IIRC FSD was never transferable, except Tesla occasionally did carve-outs to juice select new vehicle sales.

Whatever happened to Elon suggesting he would raise FSD pricing into the mid 5 figures because that's how valuable robotaxis are to their owners? But yeah charging just $99 monthly for FSD seems like a big fuck you to the paying beta testers. Unless it's just a temporary ploy for marketing (and even then), it doesn't seem to make sense.

How we should feel about people falling for obvious cons really depends on the con and the victims. For example, we should have sympathy for people who get wrecked by (used) auto loans at usury rates even if they're flunking the very basics of personal finance.

Elmo bros get fucked. Ah I have to sympathize - it could have been me.

Lol a couple of my coworkers that drive Tesla's routinely parrot the line "Well, I bought it before I knew he was an asshole..."

We still celebrate the SpaceX launches and then continue to debate what a douche Elon has become. (edit: Sorry. Always was. As some of you like pointing out).

I agree. Most people paying 15K for a car addon, on an already high priced car, should be sophisticated enough to do some research and thought.

Eh... You might think that, but let me share an anecdote I saw the other day: I saw someone talking about asking if it was wise to drop nearly $50k cash on a 7-person SUV that their wife wanted but didn't really need. In fact, he said he'd be happy with just a Camry. But, it seems like he wouldn't exactly hold a conversation with his spouse to discuss pros and cons of dropping so much money on such an unnecessary purchase.
