AMD Announces Radeon Raytracing Analyzer - Phoronix

The optimist in me says that AMD has released this to increase the value of their 6000 series cards so developers can make them perform better in raytracing scenes by utilizing hybrid raytracing instead of full-on raytracing.

My inner pessimist, however, tells me that AMD's 7000 series won't be able to improve raytracing power that much and since hybrid raytracing is the thing consoles are using anyway, AMD isn't too worried and just expects that developers porting console games with hybrid raytracing over to the PC will appreciate that they don't have to do too much work for supporting Radeons.

AMD never claimed to invent it (Though they are a member of PCI-SIG and were involved in its development with Intel.). AMD was the first to make use of it for GPUs however.

A lot companies are members of PCI-SIG including Nvidia.

What are we going to do next, blame Nvidia for rebranding raytracing?

People believe many things, whether it's due to ignorance, lies, laziness, or even efficiency. The information for what Nvidia RTX stands for was readily available from many information sources. The same applies for AMD SAM. Therefore this is less about the "scary marketing" and more about individual consumers not willing to analyze a sales pitch. (which isn't always a bad thing, sometimes it's worth saving the time and accepting/rejecting the pitch based on confidence in the brand)

AMD did invent resizable bar with GPUs.

It took months for the others to copy AMD, so it is quite clear AMD invented using REBAR with GPUs for a performance gain.


It is also clear AMD was part of the partnership that invented REBAR. Yes, there were other members, but it goes to my previous point AMD creates many technologies as part of partnerships and promotes open standards.


Claims that AMD did not invent using REBAR with GPUs for performance gain are false, as no other member of said partnership even so much as hinted of this application of REBAR with GPUs.


AMD did invent using REBAR to improve performance with GPUs, and anyone claiming the others are not copying AMDs implementation / work are in denial.

As far as I know Resizable BAR is optional PCI-e feature and AMD didn't invent it. They were first to use it and gave their implementation a fancy name.

Or you know they might have been a stake holder in development of the technology since they tend to like to work with Standards companies for implementing their technologies.

Advanced Micro Devices = AMD


Although, it does appear another little known company, Hewlett-Packard, may have been collaborating with AMD.



HP was a difficult company to work for back in the day. If you were not careful and left the HP building to quickly, you would have ran out of HP. And die.
