Question Constant Errors after Upgrade

I'm not sure if it's Windows related or Hardware related...

I recently upgraded my daughter's computer because it would randomly just freeze. The main components were 7 years old so I did a budget upgrade for her

Intel i5 11600K
Gigabyte Aorus Z590 Elite AX

Leftover/reused parts initially
Corsair DDR4 3000 (8gb x 4)
AMD RX580 GPU
Corsair 650 watt power supply

Upon putting it together I realized the motherboard power she had was only an 8 pin and the new motherboard needed the 8+4. I didn't want to have to buy another power supply so I put in an adapter to make it a 8+8.

Everything was assembled and all plugs are exactly where they need to be. It absolutely would not even boot to the gigabyte screen. After doing a little reading on the exact motherboard, apparently it has some slight issues with using four sticks of memory so I decided to test each stick individually on all four slots and verified that all the sticks of memory did work so I ended up just using two sticks to get everything up and running.

I could get Windows 10 installed and then within five to seven minutes it would freeze and I would get some blue screen error message and it would reboot. This happened multiple times so I started trading the memory sticks and that didn't help. I removed the AMD video card and ran right off the motherboard video and that also did not change the outcome. Eventually, it got to the point where it wouldn't even make it through an entire install of Windows before it would freeze up. And now it gets to the bio screen and I can go through everything and biles without issue including resetting the CMOS and all that but when I try to boot from the USB stick to install Windows it freezes there now and not go past it.

I went and bought another Gigabyte Aorus Z590 Elite AX motherboard and still the same issue.

I replaced the Corsair memory with a new kit of DDR4 3000 (16gb x 2).... same issue

I tried another M.2 drive and same issue. I've tried resetting the CMOS multiple times and booting with only 1 Memory stick..... same issue

I've been building computers for 20+ years and never had this much BS... I've ALWAYS had great luck with Gigabyte motherboards but is that the main issue here? The motherboard not liking my hardware?

Some of the errors.... they come up different each time...

Kmode exception not handled
Kernel security check failure
Driver IRQL not less or equal
Interrupt exception not handled

Could just be the download is corrupt or the USB drive is dying.
I tried 3 different USB drives and same issue. I'm just confused because of the motherboards dislike for 4 memory sticks first of all.... and then the fact that it initially got windows installed and THEN had the freeze ups and over a few days got to the point it freezes and boot-loops the moment Windows USB tries to start its transfer. And also on 2 different motherboards (same model)

Remove the 8+8 pin adapter. Only use the 8 pin on the motherboard. The extra 4 pin is really only necessary if doing overclocking.

I would strip it down to only CPU and the memory modules you want to use, boot to memtest86 on a USB flash drive and see if it's stable. I always do that before an OS install on new hardware where stability is not yet established. If you get memory errors, consider the OS install toast and gain stablity, then reinstall, not overtop of itself, rather a clean install where there isn't the risk of corruption.

No need to wonder if CPU is overheating, you can get a good "enough" idea what temp range it's operating in by just going into the bios setup page for hardware monitoring and let it sit there for a couple minutes. While that isn't a full load temp, you wouldn't be causing anywhere near full load yet, doing only what you've described so far.

I tend to agree that this sounds like a memory related issue, based on the BSOD messages. Definitely run Memtest.

You tried just installing two DIMM configuration and still crashing, right? Sounds more like your PSU may be the trouble all along.

I had it running when I left for work tonight. It passed the first 2 tests and was 75% through test 3 and didn't show any errors.... I'm stumped. I do have a new 750 watt Corsair PSU coming just to rule that out

Yep... crashes/freezes on 2 sticks. It won't even boot with 4 in.... which in itself kinda ticks me off. Looking up the motherboard on the internet it seems as if this was a very common problem and gigabyte never addressed it

I presume latest BIOS?

Wow 750W is a bit overkill. Here is RTX 4060 Ti review tested on Ryzen 7 7800X3D 120W, Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master, 32GB DDR5-6000. The RX580 is 185W vs. 165W for RTX 4060 Ti. Max total system power consumption under load: < 300 watts. Same test setup, but with 285W RTX 4070 Ti = 400 watts. But, it's your money....

You didn't mentioned anything about drives, which most likely is also a leftover. Could also be a dying drive.

I have two M.2 drives sitting on the desk. I have tried both and same issue. I use my M.2 to USB adapter and can plug them both into MY rig and they both seem fine. I have a new power supply coming just to rule that out... I actually need a backup here anyway.

Next test I'm going to run is to try booting from a DVD-Rom drive just to see if the front I/O panel has a glitch or something. After that, I'm yanking everything apart and starting over with new parts

One of the 2 motherboards is the new BIOS. The one I just got is still F3. Same issue for both though. Initially, a fresh install of Windows 10 went without a hitch. It was completely loaded and I was getting some settings done and it locked up. I rebooted and it locked again within 5 min. I blanked out the hard drive and reinstalled Win 10 fresh again. I barely got through setup and it locked up. Tried a fresh install again and it got locked up mid install and now I get past the Gigabyte Aorus screen when the little progress circle balls start and thays where it boot-loops or errors.

Side note: thank you everyone for taking the time to reply or give input without being sparky like some other "help boards"...

I am experienced at building these for the last 20 years but I don't get into the 1's and 0's of the whole thing. I've had bad parts here and there both used and new and usually process of elimination wins but this upgrade has me absolutely stumped

Have you always used the USB to nvme adapter or are you just using that during this troubleshooting? Are you using the front panel USB or on the rear?

This is a M.2 to USB converter. I only use it when I need to check things on a M.2 drive so I don't have to take my PC apart. I put the M.2 in the adapter and then plug it into the front USB of my rig

Have you tried connecting it to the rear USB ports instead? Did you also use the Windows 10 USB install in the front ports? Have you tried the rear ports for that?

In regards to M.2. M.2 is the form factor for the drive, like 2.5" or 3.5" for disc drives. NVME refers to the interface type. NVME uses PCIe. If the drive has 2 notches where the contacts are located it is a SATA drive. If there is only 1 notch it is an NVME drive. None of this matters to the problem you are having but just want to clarify nomenclature. I assumed that the M.2 was an NVME drive since the build is relatively new.

I'd try a different boot device, just to be sure. And by that I mean the drive plugged directly into the board with no adapters.

The M.2 is plugged into the board. I've tried all 3 of the M.2 connections with 2 different drives. The adapter thing is just what I used to check the drives on MY rig (not my daughters) to make sure they were working
