I asked what he'd be studying..."weird amalgamation of stuff. Bioinorganic/coordination chemistry."

Bet your ass I don't.

I've been clearing a small area that I let get a bit overgrown. I can only do a bit each day, so it's taking far too long. But in among all the Honeysuckle, Virginia Creeper, wild Blackberries and other stuff is quite a bit of Poison Ivy.

Not a bump, not an itch anywhere.

So far.

The other day I noticed my insurance company deposited two payments into my account, $100 and another just a bit over $100. And that was right after taking out my regular payment of $150ish. I thought, weird, some kind of error they corrected? I was on nights so didn't have time to really look into it further since I'm sleeping in the day and by the time I'm up and settled in at work everything is closed.

Today was my first day off so was looking though my mail and had a letter from my insurance saying they had a surplus this year so they sent everyone a bonus. First I have that happen, I'll take it!

Got a cheapo kickstand for my hand me down mountain bike.

Installed and worked just fine, so things are looking up.

I may have finally found a contractor to actually do my wood stove chimney. He seems like a reliable guy and he should be able to get it done within the next few weeks. I was starting to lean towards doing it myself but still rather have someone else do it, so hopefully he pulls through.

Going to charge me around $500, which is way less than I figured.

I'll still have to finish the inside part but most of that is done. I actually started a bit on it a while back, need to move the freezer so I can continue so had to install an outlet for that.

So I bought an Eltek -48v rectifier shelf a while back, and ran into the issue that the web interface requires flash. Thankfully there is a telnet interface so I was able to do all the config from there but it still bothered me that I couldn't access the web interface without some weird work around like using an old XP VM with the right version of flash etc.

So got in touch with support and they actually helped me despite not being a commercial customer. Unfortunately had to cut the call short when my windows 7 VM was acting up and I couldn't get the mouse to work on my windows 7 machine again... (it's a chronic issue with that system) as the upgrade process requires Windows. I did manage to get all the appropriate files and documentation over the phone though so decided to try to do the rest myself...and boom, I have a working web interface now.

A bit of a janky test bench setup going on right now but almost at a point where I'm ready to rack it and start doing proper wiring with #2 cables. This will basically be my new UPS that will cover my server rack and workstations. Still need to buy inverters and bigger batteries though. I'm just glad I got this piece of the puzzle as it was the hardest part to get. You can't just buy this sort of thing new as a consumer.

Had cataract surgery on my first eye yesterday...weirdest feeling ever having the roto-rooter out the old lens...went in this morning for a post-surgical checkup...20/20 vision in that eye...for the first time in more than 40 years. I may still need reading glasses to correct the astigmatism...only time will tell.

I had to use a gender neutral bathroom with lots of stalls, sinks and some urinals in it, with women and men of all age groups.

And it was absolutely fine.

Auto Insurance renewal came in ... rate reduced by $90 and some kind of weird trip insurance added to the basic Roadside Assistance/Breakdown coverage. If I break down more than 100 miles from home, they pay lodging, meals and 'alternative transportation', or at least a portion of those. Thing is, I rarely drive more than 100 miles from home.

Rate reduction is cool though.

Bought 64 GB Crucial DDR5 memory for laptop a few days ago for $163 on Amazon.

Today, the memory was on sale for $127. Did a quick chat with Amazon customer service, and even though they don't offer price matching, they made a one time exception since I was a loyal and valuable customer

I use my Chase Reserve card for about 99% of my purchases but just realized today I could get a 30% discount on Amazon for using my Discover card. Just got a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro NVNe SSD for $99 (plus 5% cashback)...

Also got another $120 statement credit from AMEX for getting a Dell laptop (the one I got the Crucial memory for).

Had a very satisfying dinner. Nothing to complain about. If this were my last meal, I would die happy. The simple pleasures of life are the best.

The stretch of highway that goes to where all the big box stores like Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Walmart, the mall etc is finally open again. It was partially closed all summer and it was always a pita going that way.
