Not even 2003 Opteron/Athlon 64, nor 2006 Conroe, nor any other significant launch, comes close to how absurd Rome obliterates the Xeons in raw performance, price performance, and even on power consumption.


Also, pay A LOT of attention to the EPYC 7252. 16C with all the features of Rome (8 RAM channels, 128 PCIe Lanes) for 650 U$D, less than what the AM4 Ryzen 3950X is expected to cost. What doesn't oonvince me is that it only has 64 MiB Cache L3, the 7282 is also 16C, got 128 MiB but cost 978 U$D. Any idea of how many chiplets and what CCX/Cache L3 configuration they are using?
Regardless, I think that the 7282, saving for its lowish 2.9-3.2 GHz Frequency, could be a wonderful entry level HEDT Processor for people that wants a Zen 2 TR now, or needs more I/O than TR platform provides.

32MiB per chiplet, so the 7252 is most likely a 2 chiplet 16c just like the 3950x;
the 7282 most likely a 4 chiplet 16c.

Now, the 7282 can either be 2 cores per ccx, or 1 ccx disabled per chiplet. I like the latter based on latency tests of zen2 core - core from same ccx vs to other ccxs.

The chiplet approach will transform entire marketS. From embedded over consoles, desktop and to server market. It's difficult to grasp how effective it is from a business perspective from ttm new product types cost and heck even just performance in spades. It's so radical it's difficult to see where it ends.

So simple an idea so extreme impact.
