woohoo!! got the 80 gig PS3 for b-day gift. haven't had a chance to open the box yet but was wondering if the EC was taken out from all current ps3's. the box did read that BC may be limited. does that mean no EC but software emulation?

Update on the component connection:

decided to go the component switch route... dvi switch was waaaaay too expensive. anyhow, my component switch (30 bucks at buy.com, monoprice was out of stock - and by the way, monoprice's price on cables are friggin' sweat!), ethernet cables, component cable AND my new 750gig seagate freeagent pro (ugh, another headache all on its own) all arrived today. ^^ was one happy dude at work today.

came home tonight and hooked up the 360 and ps3 to the component switch (Startech.com Convergeav 4 to 1 AV Switch) and voila! got sound and everything! BUT, it looks like this one-station-for-all is coming at the expense of visual quality. video on both the ps3 and 360 look a tad bit washed out, as well a oh-so-slightly blurriness. i'm thinking it's probably the cheap switch. i was in such a rush to get it that i forgot to check for quality :| and completely forgot about the link provided by mrpickens... T_T going to try to return that switch and get a new one...

Software emulation only if I recall correctly. It was supposedly capable of supporting 80 or so percent of PS2 games.

on a side note... planning on hooking up the ps3 on to my Dell 2405FPW (no HDMI output). i currently have the xbox360 hooked up through the component. is it possible to buy a cable (HDMI to DVI) and connect it through the video card to do a pass through?

HDMI -> DVI cables work perfectly, but I'm pretty sure you need HDCP on the monitor for it to display anything.

Are you saying that your video card has a DVI INPUT?

Yeah so what you're going to need is a switch of some sort. Component video switches are only ~$20. I don't know what resolutions the PS3 is capable of over component though. I don't know if DVI switches exist. HDMI switches do exist, but your computer and monitor don't have DVI, so you'd need an adapter at each end (I'm assuming that is possible, because DVI/HDMI adapters do exist. But I do not know if they work in both directions or only one, and I don't know if there is any disadvantage to using them).

Sony BC database for 80GB (and 60GB):
Sony PS2 PS1

For anyone thinking of getting a 40GB model, it does play PS1 / PSX games (but no PS2 games) with the same BC notes as the 80GB

yeah... i guess i'll just have to go home and try different things (well, if nothing works then a new tv would be in order  ) worst comes to worst, i'm thinking of just swapping between the comp and ps3 for the dvi port on the monitor. don't know how audio's gonna work though.

DaveSimmons: Thanks for the site!

gaah! you mean ps3's got the HDCP thing going?

Most HD devices with HDMI out do.

No...I think he'll be fine.

I'm looking at the PS3 manual which clearly states that without an HDCP handshake, no video or audio will be output over HDMI.

You should research before giving bad advice...

Do what mugs suggested and buy a component switcher. That will be the easiest solution.

And just so you know, you can output sound on the rca cables while using hdmi. That's how mine is run.

my attempt to play my ps3 on my lcd (viewsonic vx2025wm) using an hdmi<>dvi adapter failed, but my brothers attempt worked with same adapter and a viewsonic vx2245wm. im pretty sure that it doesnt have hdcp, so i have no idea why it works.

Different firmware installed on the PS3s?

hrm... guess i'll just have to try. otherwise, as mrpickins suggests, a component switcher.. and god dang! those DVI switches are expensive! could probably buy a tv for that price.

Forget a DVI switch, get something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/4x1-HD-C...&qid=1195013060&sr=1-2

PS3 does 1080i out of component cables, BTW.

Edit: Wow, you're not kidding about the price of DVI switches... :Q

Get a mechanical switch box - you don't get a remote but cheap mechanical connection looks better on tv than cheap electronic switches.

Just throwing it out there because I saw some HDCP talk: YES! You NEED HDCP compliant display. I use PS3 20GB (HDMI) -> (Sceptre X20WG Naga (DVI))

Huh? Monoprice has sweet 4x1 HDMI switch for only $42. You say you spent $500 on the next generation console and then decided to save $12 by getting component switch instead of HDMI?

If your TV has HDMI input, getting HDMI switch is a prudent investment. Component is so yesterday...

Besides, somebody please correct me, but PS3 would not show Blu-Ray movies in full 1080P glory over Component since component does not support HDCP. Even if your Dell monitor does not support HDCP, you could run HDMI-DVI for now and when you get yourself HDCP-compliant monitor (TV) you would be ready to enjoy PS3 to its fullest.

okok... back to drawing board.

i've got two options.

1. Component Switch
Xbox360 and PS3 both hook up to the switch via component, and video outputs to monitor and audio to stereo. price = $26.99

computer is hooked to monitor via dvi.

2. HDMI Switch
Xbox360 = Video component to monitor directly. audio hooks up to component switch (which i already bought), outputs to stereo.
ps3 = HDMI hooked to HDMI switch. audio goes to the component switch using the component cable.
pc = dvi cable converted to HDMI connects to HDMI switch.
HDMI switch output is converted to DVI and connects to monitor.

price = $18.48 + cable + converter

which option would be most optimal? i'm thinking component would be much simpler... but is there a noticable difference between HDMI and component? Also, i checked the specifications on the HDMI DVI cables and it states single-link bandwidth. will this limit the resolution output for the pc running at 1980x1200?

thanks for all the inputs.

p.s. oh man... i'm getting dizzy with all these cables and converters and male and female... @_@
