Huh? Monoprice has sweet 4x1 HDMI switch for only $42. You say you spent $500 on the next generation console and then decided to save $12 by getting component switch instead of HDMI?
He didn't spend $500, he got it for his birthday, as the title says.
My bad - I should have been more attentive before opening my mouth. I would say that HDMI switch has more potential in it, but given the current state of affairs that poster has, he may want to postpone buying it and just go with the component switch.

okok... back to drawing board.
i've got two options.
1. Component Switch
Xbox360 and PS3 both hook up to the switch via component, and video outputs to monitor and audio to stereo. price = $26.99
computer is hooked to monitor via dvi.
2. HDMI Switch
Xbox360 = Video component to monitor directly. audio hooks up to component switch (which i already bought), outputs to stereo.
ps3 = HDMI hooked to HDMI switch. audio goes to the component switch using the component cable.
pc = dvi cable converted to HDMI connects to HDMI switch.
HDMI switch output is converted to DVI and connects to monitor.
price = $18.48 + cable + converter
which option would be most optimal? i'm thinking component would be much simpler... but is there a noticable difference between HDMI and component? Also, i checked the specifications on the HDMI DVI cables and it states single-link bandwidth. will this limit the resolution output for the pc running at 1980x1200?
thanks for all the inputs.
p.s. oh man... i'm getting dizzy with all these cables and converters and male and female... @_@
you won't see dramatic difference between component and DVI on your monitor. I am currently running my Xbox 360 via component to 1080P TV and PS3 via HDMI - both look great. HDMI has advantages in less cable clutter and sound passthrough but in your case it's mute, so until you have a HDCP compliant monitor/TV, the component should be just fine.
Relax and enjoy your games!
P.S. Oh, and Happy Birthday!
