Current New York Times piece on passage in the House of aid bill.

This should get anyone through the paywall for the next 14 days, i.e. until Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Let's not all be in too much of a rush to jump on Mike Johnson's dick.

That he eventually did the right thing doesn't wash away that it took 6 months of Ukrainian blood to get there.

However, I hope MJ's ambition to be speaker keeps him working with Dems and against the MAGA coalition in Congress / court.

I’d also note that this vote fully exposed that a majority of House Republicans are now owned by Russia

It is a little bit of a fluff piece - the biggest problem is the time it took to get there. I mean really 3 months is excessive. Don't get me wrong i think they made a true believer out of him and i think going forward he will be less radical (less brainwashed?); but real people are dying every day and that seems to be something folks forget as they yap day in and day out on this board.

Well i'm not 100% sure that is the case i think the actual vote was 45% for and 55% against (republicans) but remember a lot of those republicans are just doing what trump sez and not actually free thinking Russian supporters.

Eh, I think most of them are just useful idiots. Russia's real win was convincing Rs that they were the true conservative nation by every means possible and then trumpeting that throughout all of social media, talk radio hosts and FOX. They do own Trump - and that was the icing on the cake (kompromat I suppose).

Two key take aways from US intel.
  1. Russia has no intention of stopping at just Ukraine. Everybody knows this.
  2. Ukraine is close to total collapse.
In a small meeting with lawmakers, Mr. Johnson “made it pretty clear that if we didn’t get this done in April, that it could be too late for Ukraine,” Representative Don Bacon, Republican of Nebraska, said.

When they tell you who they are ...

Steve Bannon Fires Four-Word Rant at Ukraine Aid Supporters

Former Donald Trump aide wrote on social media that lawmakers who voted for a bill to send billions in aid to Ukraine were "traitors."
... believe them.

More projection from the insurrection loving Putin caucus, in this case the thief who stole from his own rubes and their Border Wall fantasy.

Actual traitors accusing others of it, the ones who are standing up for freedom and against fascist aggression.

I'm glad that no one really cares about what this thief and nazi think, but his fury makes me happy. I ever see him in person I might just have to declare Punch a Nazi day.

America detractor raildogg:

Control? China (and Russia!!!) are all about control!

The argument I've encountered on the news is that Tik Tok/TikTok being Chinese owned is conduit to China mining its users' data which promulgates the CCP's social control agenda. China itself is a surveilled state. High resolution cameras everywhere they can get them. Privacy does NOT exist in China. They profile everybody. You watch your Ps and Qs or will feel the long cold arm of the government on your shoulder. China cannot be expected to be kinder to foreigners than they are to their own populace.

American congress is not trying to shut down Tik Tok, they are trying to make sure the owners are not subject to control of the CCP and not furnishing them with users' data.
Damn straight they are, they're probably compiling something akin to their very own social credit score on Americans among whatever else suits them. Unnerves me I've got people around me that use TikTok in the private sector, I'd ban it at the DNS level on my own equipment if not for the protests I'd hear from youthful voices. Fortunately we are banning installations and usage of the app at the federal level. I have friends who throw out the free speech argument and I can sympathize with it, and I'm not generally one to trade an ounce of freedom for security, but I've also got major reservations of a foreign country damn near undoubtedly having an insane amount of our data to compile for their own nefarious purposes.

He’s from the silent generation, not the boomers, FWIW.
I honestly didn't think there were any left. TY
My grandparents were horrified watching pearl harbor in 1941. They were harvesting pineapples the day of the invasion.
They had a front row seat of pearl harbor as high school kids.
My grandfather joined the air force in 41 and by the time he got his wings the war was over.

Elected politicians taking orders from a low IQ felon and sexual predator who does not hold office. A Russian asset on top of it all. Just disgusting.

People like MTG need to be purged from office. Thankfully I'm seeing comforting signs. Unions seem to be winning the South. Fox viewership has plummeted. Anti abortion rights legislation is fueling an electoral locomotive the GQP is about to take to the chin. I think a 'repug colonic' for Congress is on the way. *knock on wood*

It's a pity we're stuck with Lady G until 2026, talk about worthless. Trump probably doesn't even notice that kind of attention to his balls.

The NATO arsenal is being dumped on Ukraine along with endless billions and this person says "If Ukraine has been keeping Russia at bay with draw down dollars, even $24 billion in direct aid is gonna make shit really suck for Russia through 2025."

All I can say is LOL

Well, at least now NATO and the US have to replenish their diminished arsenals at a very high cost to their taxpayers. This will ensure great profits to the weapons manufacturers and endless money for political donations. Win-win.

Question is whether any of this will help Ukraine withstand the Russian offensives? Who knows for sure but the lack of manpower of Ukraine is the main issue here. That is why this new mobilization law was passed and other measures are being put in. Zelenskyy needs more Ukrainian men so his war, on behalf of Western countries, can continue.

I forgot to bring up the artillery shortage, lack of spare parts, lack of cohesion, lack of trained soldiers, lack of air cover and air support and a shortage of anti-air missiles though but that's OK. This new bill will wave that away.

Hey Ivan, those "diminished arsenals" would turn what's left of Russia's third rate militia into a body-bag manufacturer's wet dream in the space of a long weekend. That would be without much ground troop involvement at all. And over that time period, the russian population's largest intake would be tomahawks and not vodka.

When will America send its soldiers to Ukraine to fight Russia instead of using Ukrainian men as cannon fodder?
French boots are coming. Other European boots will follow. Dont worry about it.
The only way out for Putin at this point is MAD.
Dead man walking. He just doesnt know it yet.

Russians are counting on us being too cowardly to push back against invading Russians. That our pitiful effort at supplies is no match for Russia's total mobilization of men and production.
Thus far, they wouldn't be wrong. We delay and reduce our aid, and Ukraine is forced back time and again.

We have yet to step up to meet the challenge.

There's only one good reason for going to war, and that's to push back a murderous war-starting invading wanna be emperor. How many people think the US was wrong for joining the fight against Germany in the early 40s? I'm pretty anti-war but if that's the only way to stop one of these assholes, so be it.

And that's exactly right, Russia is counting on us to be Neville Chamberlain and cave in and appease. Then a few years from now he gears up and goes after the next chunk of "future Russia".

The West is going to have to stand up to this modern-day mini-Hitler sooner or later. He's not going to stop on his own, so pay now or pay later? Of course he might keel over, not exactly young and healthy despite his he-man image, and who knows what the next putz will be.

Seriously. It's absolutely obscene how so many articles are fawning on him for simply doing a basic part of the job after preventing a very important and bipartisan bill from getting a vote for so long. And who also helped kill a border deal for Trump
He is terrible and happened to finally have a brief moment of clarity
