Does this game really justify the CPU requirements? And this engine seems to be a worst case scenario for Zen processors vs Intel.
OOF. This game to me, makes my desire to pick up an HDR WQHD monitor even greater, but with My Zen3 CPU and 4070Ti, that would be a waste. Time to plan another bank heist.

The HDR profile in this game is totally messed up by default. Blacks get crushed and look like dark blue. I used Reshade to correct the black level, but the gamma still looks off. Metro Exodus had this problem too.

The game is bottlenecked by a single thread and seems to prefer Intel for that reason. For me the framerate drops into the 80s regardless of graphics settings in areas with lots of NPCs, like New Atlantis.

Did any of you do the mantis side quest? It's from a note dropped by spacers at one point.

I'm level 10 but there ends up being some crazy high level enemies in that area. It's weird because the whole outside section and some previous portions of that quest have like level 8 enemies.

Looks like I need to buy some new weapons. I've been running around doing side quests so much that none of them really required any weapons and neither did the first two main missions require anything more powerful than the starting machine gun and pistol.

Yes, that one is definitely worth doing. You get a great ship and a batcave base early on. I'm using the Marksman's AA-99 (you can get it at New Atlantis) and an upgraded pistol that the pirate boss in that map drops. The only tough enemies were some robots at the end.

Every character I have started (mostly testing purposes) somehow manages to get the Advanced Regulator pistol very early, that is a ~100 DMG weapon and makes the Mantis mission really easy. I have found that doing it at lvl 20+ can get you some really nice loot that only spawns at 20+.

for those who cant be bothered, or who are allergic to reddit, players have speculated that a number of game elements in Starfield are vestigial remnants of a system that required you to consume fuel to hyperjump.

while this might seem of minimal impact, the point is that there are no fuelling stations outside throughout the galaxy - you would need to make your own.

which is why the game has skills & features aimed at building outposts, which in the current game are practically useless.

Interesting theory. More traditional rpg and less survival game aspects.

- I smell a big fat expansion pack / DLC in the works that will really hook into a lot of these "vestigial" systems and make them a core part of gameplay.

Bethsoft always makes platforms, a series of interlocking systems, not games. That is their whole schtick. Players then make the fun using these interlocking systems.

I would argue that these aren't even vestigial, they're there with the intent to use them further down the line.

i need to say no to this. Bethesda makes games, then modders turn it into a platform.

sure probably at some point Todd thought "fkit, modders will fix it" but this is still below my expectation as a game.

the real advantage that Skyrim had is that it was easy to mod.
MAYBE modders will come out with a "survival mode" Starfield but by then you have cheapened the experience. Like, Skyrim now has a eat/sleep/cold mode but i won't put myself through it - if you want to make a good survival game, you need to build it from the ground up.

By definition, the game is the platform. One needs something to build on in order to make mods. The game devs provide access to certain game APIs so that modders can provided automations, alternative graphics, objects like weapons, characters, new game modes or even total conversions (though that would be a heady undertaking in a game like this). I have really enjoyed using mods on many games and have written some mods myself.

If anyone has not done so, I am going to recommend that you do the vanguard quest line. Not sure why they did not open the main story with this. Oh and also definitely do the mantis quest.

You get a free ship that's really more of an upgrade than the stock one, storage racks for weapons and more items and mine also came with some cool weapons on board.

Avoid the weapon racks though, they will eat your guns due to a bug in the game.

It seems you can do all the different factions' quests up to a point, and don't need to choose between them until much later.

Well, I’m going to ask for this as a Christmas present from my wife - so I hope there are a couple of patches that fix these stupid bugs. If they don’t get fixed, I may wait.

You could just pay $10 for a month of game pass like I have while waiting for my 7800XT to get here.

Taking Kid Stuff also nets you a free ship among other stuff.

I had a save nuked on Kreet by boarding a Class B ship that took off with me on board... can't fly those yet so was stuck lol. Also got into a death loop on Mars by boarding a Pirate Ship that took off and got blown up before I could reach the bridge & take it over... many deaths ensued before Alt+F4 fixed it... I do wish the ship registration fees weren't almost the value of the ship, sucks to make a handful of creds per ship.

I put over 200 hours into this game. Copy pasta outposts, science research, etc. do get old fast. Adding the consume option on food and beverage was welcomed. Overall it became repetitive and somewhat boring for me, in a way the Fallout and Oblivion games never have. I'll still come back for DLC and to get more into the building aspects of outposts and ships. They are going to be continuously updating it so that's a positive sign.

I was amused at the posts that proclaimed how this game failed and if Oblivion 6 is bad the studio will go belly up. It's beyond laughable really. This was evidently, as I posited, a big win for game pass.

Wow lots of negative reviews about this game. I'll wait till it drops to $20 for Premium Edition before buying it or skip it altogether if something better comes out. Or maybe start replaying Skyrim with lots of mods again.

The premium edition came with my 7800XT. I played it on game pass while waiting for my code. I think paying $10 for game pass to play it for a month will be enough for most players.

I really liked it at first, but there are some things that hold it back from being as addictive as the other games are for me. Hopefully with the commitment to updates every 6 weeks, it'll end up a polished game. The ability to eat and drink instead of adding to inventory is such a small thing, but it makes a real difference to the experience as it saves time. They seem to be listening to feedback so let's hope they add new content to spice it up.

I finished the game and liked it, but it's tedious and I wouldn't go through it again. I still spent 130-odd hours without ever really being pulled in. The faction quests are interesting and the highlight of the game, but are all underdeveloped and lack some obvious player choices. The side quests are just generic filler (with one or two exceptions like the Crucible quest) and there is no point to exploring and leveling up because there is nothing interesting to find in a procedural world. It does have great graphics and ship building, but otherwise feels bland and generic compared to Fallout 4.
