Glad they will be adding DLSS. I'm running it native 4k with everything ultra and shadows and contact shadows down from ultra to high.

Shadows seem to take the biggest hit to fps. For the most part I get above 60 fps in outdoor areas and for example civilian outposts.

In new Atlantis where I was instructed to go after the tutorial cave, it drops below 60 several times.

I was going to pay for the DLSS pure dark mod but now that I just read about those patch notes I may hold off.

It's interesting and I like that I can pick up side quests just walking around and listening to people talk.

I got killed like 4 times by some falcon looking things and some level 5 alien dinosaur type animals.

I don't t like that the menu and key setup are not intuitive. Like mouse scroll wheel switches perspective instead of weapons. You pick up weapons but the game doesn't tell you how to switch between them.

Took me a while to figure out I have to go into the menu and favorite them. Lots of menu interactions to set things up. The game could have used a better tutorial for sure.

Space flying isn't really flying other than combat and going around the orbit. It's not bad but you don't get the sense of speed unless you boost. It's not as bad as I thought it would be piloting the ship. I'm actually keeping an Xbox controller plugged in for the ship sections.

I have been using my BT Xbox controller because combat is way too easy with a mouse. It feels like cheating. All of the U.I. and stuff using the controller has been intuitive.

It really is Fallout in space. I'll put big hours into this playthrough. Some of you may consider side quest and activities distracting, to me it's grinding for legendary gear and XP. I like that it has expanded beyond "Another settlement needs our help."

Some of the weapons are fun to use. Disappointed how little health most food gives you. I did finally find some that is better, I hope that keeps happening in order to level with me.

I am just going to upgrade the OG ship for now, that part of the game really does seem like it can turn into a massive time sink. Which means the replay value is immense.

Ordered a Hellhound 7800XT, it comes with the premium edition. I'd of bought the game to keep from paying $10 for game pass every month, so I got the card for effectively $420 lulz. They knew what they were doing.

Glitches: I have run into some finally. Dropped a gun and it got stuck in a wall, very Fallout 4, and kept slamming around making a racket stuck there with the physics fighting with collision detection or something, until I left the area. Saw a NPC clip through a door on Mars.

I also had one crash to desktop. Happened in Atlantis right where traversal happens. Everything about hardware temps in my full tower PC are outstanding, and this system is rock solid, definitely a game issue.

I haven't been using a frame counter so I can subjectively observe how smooth the game feels. Traversal around Atlantis I can tell. Other than that stays smooth with maybe a twitch here and there elsewhere. Nothing immersion breaking.

I ebay'd the AMD code for $40. It works as long as you have one of the supported AMD products. Initial impressions are nice, definitely feels like Fallout 4 or Outer Worlds. I'm using mouse/kb and the DLSS 2 mod above, and a few others that improve the UI.

5 hours in and all I've been doing is side activities. Lots of running around and trying to understand the area without a city map and talking to people. I think I got to level 5 doing all that. I took a trait that helps with persuasion so that comes in handy some times.

I probably should do the story mission so I can get some better gadgets or weapons. All I have is a pistol you get in the beginning and a small rifle.

You're doing food wrong, look into Gastronomy & Nutrition. As for bugs... Sarah had one leg raised and floated around on a planet until I took off. Had the gun thing happen a few times and with random objects & NPC's getting stuck in doors still able to shoot. Had a container & other interactive items floating in the air on Mars as the platform & crates they were supposed to be on didn't spawn. I also can't progress the Galbank collections as the second bounty is a ship I have to kill but the ship doesn't spawn, just a cosmetic piece floating in space. Oh and my parents have gotten kidnapped or something, Dad said come urgently but the appartment is slightly ransacked & no sign of them anywhere (neither in house, neon club etc) with no note or mission to follow.

Oh and a bugbear for me is the bottles in boxes, in FO4 you can loot the bottles, not so in Starfield, they are one item that you can move but not collect. Also no working sinks, showers etc my character must stink to high hell with no washing in Starfield.

In other Starfield News, is Creation Engine 2 really an upgrade on 1? Based on this video they sacrificed quite a bit to go ocean wide, puddle deep (or just to enable people to fudge around with thousands of tubers).

SF definitely looks like an upgrade to me. I agree that they cut some corners but all in all, I think this game looks better than FO4. The amount of detail is nice. I don't know, if you are having fun then just enjoy the game for what it is.

How complex is the base building in this game? I'm not a huge fan of building bases (didn't like it in FO as well). Is base building in Starfield purely optional or has to be done for plot progression?

AFAICT it is mainly done to farm resources. Seems like it would be optional to plot progression, but I am only ~1/4 into the main story.

I'm a bit further into this game now. The plot and characters feel bland, but the gameplay mechanics are fun, both the FPS parts and the space shooting. The whole game feels like a mishmash of several past games, like Mass Effect Andromeda, Freelancer and of course Fallout 4, but lacks any clear identity of its own. The whole world has much less personality to it than the Fallout universe. I'm still going to have fun with it since I liked all those past games, but it hasn't really gripped me.

I think I've done all the side activities I could find up to level 6 in new Atlantis. So I went back to talk to Sara to start the first main mission. Lots of fast traveling form place to place and talking to people.

I also agree the dialogue and characters are kind of bland coming from Baldur's Gate 3. Went to Mars and then got side tracked by another side activity about helping this miner guy out.

Waiting for the game to pick up and actually have some action or get more interesting. I like it although they definitely killed the immersion with so many small loading sections. Not that they are long or anything but there's just a lot of them.

Is it too early to be talking about modding yet?

I keep finding myself wanting a level of completeness for this game that's likely 5 years worth of expansions and modding down the line.

I set up several small mods for fixing the UI, reticle speed, graphics settings, skipping ship cutscenes, etc.

I feel like I'm not playing it correctly. I know part of the idea is that you are supposed to go and explore the outskirts of the planets and such but I almost never do because I don't have have any incentive to. I went into a cave once and found some supplies but there wasnt anything going on there.

In addition I keep getting all these side activities which I feel like I can't just let go. Maybe I should be focusing more on the story missions?

I'm still using the first ship and there's no way I'm attempting to rebuild it as I don't have the time. Perhaps I can buy another one since I have almost 100k credits. But the ship isn't used much from what I'm seeing other than to fast travel.

I love the idea of this game but I've never enjoyed a Bethesda game. They always look cool and I'm excited to start playing and then 8 hours later I put it down and never feel like playing again.

i start getting into base building and then end up using my keyboard as a stress relieving device, because behthesda has the worst base building mechanics, where things you don't want to snap in place, will snap in place, and you can never get orientation or allignment correct so it always looks off with gaps.

I'll ask: Do you build bases just for the sake of building bases, or is there a clearly defined goal for building bases? Do the bases ever become populated with NPCs, or do they remain fortresses of solitude for the entirety of the game? If they do populate, can you get merchants/vendors/etc to move in?

I love the idea of base building within a fully featured open world "rpg/shooter/whatever" type game, but if I'm ultimately just building monuments to my awesomeness and not actual bases/fortifications that provide additional value beyond simply existing then my interest in them drops to 0 pretty fast.

resource gathering / leveling hax / research hax.

its easier making 100,000 structural components then killing 3000-4000 npcs.

Also easier to get resources for modding weapons and suits when you have them on hand.

The first gameplay footage of Starfield was revealed a couple days ago and looks to have everything we wanted in a sequel to Freelancer.

I really hope Starfield turns out to be hugely successful with an active modding community like Skyrim. Bethesda beating Chris Roberts to the punch would be great to witness.
Well, finally watched this. Looks really cool. Fallout4 meets Outer Worlds times ten, at least. This is my initial reaction, now I'll start reading posts here .

In FO4, it was really mods that saved my sanity with base building and crafting. I played through the campaign for each faction before my brother got me into modding. FO4 really came to life after that (+ a new video card that ran good frame rates). Just looked it up - 470 hours of put into FO4, but I put it down for a while till I got the new GFX card.
