The ACG review posted above makes it look fun. I have put almost 600hrs into Fallout 4 and more than that into New Vegas. Once I pick this up, I will probably play it consistently for years, just like the others.

I play games on low end hardware a lot, so fun game play is > eye candy for my money.

ROFL 3080 12GB not even able to run 1080p ultra at 60 fps without FSR in Daniel Owen's bench in a game that ugly
The game will get patched and/or drivers will optimize better. AMD sponsored it, so Nvidia and Intel having issues early on is not surprising.

I agree it doesn't look nearly good enough to justify the performance hit, but maybe that will get improved later as well.

It's funny if you look at recommended system requirements they are way higher on the AMD side than the Nvidia. Eg 6700 XT is faster than a 2080 Super but Bethesda lists the recommended requirement as either RX 6800 XT or RTX 2080.

Fallout 4 was ok but it was no New Vegas, which was far and away my favorite of the 3D Fallout games. Fallout 2 is the still the king of the series for me though.

ACG said it looked pretty good in terms of the planets and terrain. I was watching someone stream it last night and the missions he was doing felt interesting much more than fallout ever interested me.

But barring no RTX and other special effects I do agree that it should not be this intense on pc to run. But this is the norm for all amd sponsored titles that I have tried.

Jedi survivor, Callisto protocol, etc. All barely kept 60 fps on my 13900k and 4090 without dips if you didn't care to use fsr.

I'll try it out without fsr to see how it fares. If anything the free DLSS mod should help. The paid DLSS mod is if you want frame generation.

Haven't really dug into it but the vibe is sort of what I predicted: Bethesda was having issues giving Starfield that *spark* that Elder scrolls and Fallout both have.

NASA punk sounds cool in concept but is definitely one of the harder "vibes" to pull off because the gap between clean space age aesthetic and visually uninteresting with nothing to look at is not actually that large.

Its running on my 4790k with a 2060Super at around 40-60fps. No idea on space combat will be like but the first ground combat was playable at 40fps or so. Medium settings, fsr and dynamic res turned on.

7/10 from major reviewers is like s--t tier usually. I never expected this to GOTY territory with Zelda releasing this year but I was expecting it would be in the GOTY any other year territory.

So turning off FSR is supposed to make the game incredibly blurry so it should be left on just for sharpening even at native res WTF. Looks like 1440p medium with FSR and 80% resolution scale will be my 6700 XT's limit to play at 50+ fps.

Most reviewers scored it higher. It has an 88 on Metacritic. Not best game of the year territory, but still solid. Currently, the highest Metacritic score is a tie between Zelda and Baldur's Gate 3, at 96.

Million dollar question is Mods.

Bethesda basically makes solid 7/10 mod-platforms. IMO the only game in recent memory of theirs that had any heart or soul out of the gate was Fallout 3, the whole game is so out of character from what anyone would expect from Bethesda. Then they snapped out of it and made a proper Bethsoft game with FO4.

Hell the best 3D Fallout game is basically a professional total conversion mod...

My first impression from watching some videos:

It looks like Star Trek with upgraded visuals and textures.

Space combat would have been better with cockpit view, like in the Xwing games.

Exploring strange planets looks good.

Weapons look meh.

So basically, there will be good parts in it but having to slog through uninteresting stuff to get to the good parts seems like a chore.

I loved Skyrim. I think I played only it and NBA 2k12 for at least a year after it came out. Oblivion was amazing too. Before 76 the Bethesda Fallout games were pretty good, but the Black Isle ones were far better IMO.

Kinda enjoying it but i'm barely in it so far due to time issues, BG3's writing spoiled me, this feel so empty at the start? Kinda like going to someone's place that burns hamburgers/hot dogs after you've been dinning on fine dinning

So you're saying I should jump on Baldur's Gate 3 instead of this? I got about 30 minutes into Starfield and then the second I used the mouse in a menu it disabled the right thumbstick on my controller and I couldn't get it back lol. I'm sure that bug will get fixed quickly but doesn't inspire much confidence in the game when you can disable a controller just by moving the mouse.

I'll be going back and forth between this and Baldurs Gate. I don't think you can compare the writing, voice acting and characters between Starfield and BG3.

Make sure controller hot swap is turned on in settings.

Aussie Steve found a GPU intense forest area to do GPU testing. Great testing and fascinating results

I'll preface my unpopular opinion by stating - I am not a member of the "Why I no get 144FPS in every game!" club. I don't get outraged when a single player game that plays fine at 30fps on console doesn't run 5x that fast on a 2023 mid tier PC.

Onto the rest of my unpopular opinion: I'd use Tim's optimized settings combined with 4K with FSR on a $230 RX 7600 for a slightly better than console experience and be perfectly happy playing that way. I think there is FAR too much hand wringing, pearl clutching, wailing, and gnashing of teeth from modern PC gamers. We were once heartier folk. Now everyone's cheese falls off their cracker every time a new game comes out.

I don't know if it's short memories. People unhappy with their lives channeling their anger on gaming. An entitlement complex or what. I don't care. I am not joining the whinging unwashed masses. I'll keep gaming on everything from an APU to a RX6800 and enjoying the experiences on all of them.

Creation Engine 2 is new. Drivers and game updates will improve the experience as time goes by.

-*Elrond Voice* The blood of Númenor is spent. I was there the day it fell.

Indeed, the PC Master Race isn't what it used to be.

We've forgotten the yearly upgrade, the trash tier drivers, the monkeying with a billion different settings to get the game to stop crashing, the unscheduled trips to Fry's cause "god damn it why won't my PC turn on today", and most importantly, turning down settings.

In our victory over the console untermench, on account of consoles simply being purpose built PCs now, we lost something of ourselves never to be regained.

Me reading that as an ARC owner

But seriously, owning 2 ARC cards has brought me back to my roots. It really is the experience of using video cards BITD. It conjures that feeling of every game you fire up being a mystery as to what will happen. ARC is the box of chocolates.

It's a bummer that the game doesn't work on ARC yet. For whatever reason it may be.

The game itself looks fun from watching others play a little. Don't want a bunch of spoilers so not watching anything but testing vids. I will be playing this on gamepass next weekend. Provided the service doesn't crap the bed. If there is anything we are justified in endlessly roasting, it's the Microsoft store and its gaming services. 💩

So far there is a FOV, HDR and DLSS mod that seem like nice fixes/improvements. Will have to see, I am too cheap to spend the extra money for early access.

I've read that you can't travel from one location to the next, but instead just click stuff and load screen yourself everywhere.
