COD2, DRM.... dumb.

Holy shit what is all this? I got a cell phone yesterday so I thought I'd link it to COD so I can play. Linked it, then it asked for 2 step verification, then I had to download an authenticator app and scan a QR code. Which only gives you 20 seconds to type in the code before it vanishes and it generates another. I wasn't paying attention to the timer so I couldn't get it to work. ugh.

all
to
play
a
damn
game...

Was it worth it in the end?

Dunno the game won't open, I think it could be due to trying to play it on integrated graphics. The DRM process gets a -10 out of 1/10. I loved how it gives you 20 seconds to enter the code, like it's to launch a nuke or something.

And not a big surprise, but you really shouldn't try to play current AAA titles on UHD 550 Xe or whatever the new Intel chips have for graphics.

WAIT.

Are you telling me that instead of the iPhone, you could have bought a decent GPU instead and played ANY game other than this COD crap that won't even run after going through so much trouble???

No surprises subscription reduces game ownership, directly contradicting Microsoft's past claims.

Streaming/subscription is their ultimate end-game: you perpetually pay to own nothing, and to have no rights.

My takeaway from that is that developers just made less money with Game Pass than they did selling standalone software licenses. That's probably good(ish) news since devs will be reluctant to switch to something like Game Pass for all their sales.

I'm paying $17 a month for the phone, sure it's for like 3 years or someshits. But basically, I'm not paying much for it because $17x36 is $17 or someshits. Ain't no video card I could buy for $17 except for something like a Radeon HD3850. And I think the Xe would be faster than a 3850.

Only if their game ends up being popular. There are plenty of games that barely make any profit at all.
Basically, I think Gamepass is good if you don't think your game will become the next viral hit, but if it does you might not be able to capitalize on that to make an obscene amount of money. It is a way to hedge your bets on indy development.

Basically Gamepass is for Microsoft First Party software and small indy devs that probably would never be able to sell enough of their game to make it worth developing it, along with a handful of games that are past their prime sell by date. Pretty much what we see now.

That just makes Game Pass an alternative to stuff like Humble subscriptions. Which might not be a bad deal.

A second fine against the scum that is Epic. Microtransactions are yet another reason single player games have DRM "protection". Cloud,. DRM, subscriptions...all part of the same sewage discharge.

It's interesting how these companies claim to care deeply about climate change and the environment, yet every single cartridge comes with a chip that's nothing but e-waste. Absolutely inexcusable, but not a peep from environmentalists.

I mean great for people who got tricked into buying stuff they didn't want to/didn't have to buy through manipulation, but Fortnite is no longer single-player and frankly that story has very little to do with DRM specifically.

It has everything to do with it. You can't enforce microtransactions without DRM.

You can if it's a live service game like Fortnite.
No you can't. The "live service" is the DRM. We already had this discussion several pages back. Anything requiring a mandatory internet connection is DRM.

If you think otherwise, please show us how to add microtransactions to Fortnite without connecting to their servers.

The one that bothers me is the need for electricity to play all of these games. It is just another example of how big software is in the pockets of the power companies.
If you think otherwise, please show us how to add microtransactions to Fortnite without power to your computer!

How exactly do power companies stop off-grid solar, batteries or a generator?

If you think otherwise, please show us how to add microtransactions to Fortnite without power to your computer!
There are many ways to get personal off-grid power. Now list how many ways there are to access a "game-is-a-service(tm)" like Fortnite.

The comment about power is cute but atoms are also needed for everything too. THEREFORE DRM DOESN'T EXIST OMG!!!!!

I had Diablo 2 (and LoD) as well as Diablo 3 (+ Warcraft 3) and had over 1400 hours on my main char in Diablo 3 ... until Blizzard decided to ban me, accusing me of using "automated program" ...

Since i dislike being falsely accused, i took steps ...

- used a box cutter to destroy all the CDs / DVDs of EVERY BLIZZARD GAME i had
- used a hammer to destroy the authenticator for Diablo 3
- used scissors to cut the Warcraft 3 themed mouse pad i had

A while later, they sent me an email trying to entice me to purchase Overwatch, IIRC ... i don't recall exactly what i replied ... though i wasn't "very cordial" ... but i do recall i ended my reply with "NEVER contact me AGAIN".

Looked for alternatives in the same genre, ending up choosing Grim Dawn.

Woosh indeed. In the post above yours, access to a purchased game was arbitrarily removed AKA remote killswitch. They could do this because it's a "service".

No sireee, no DRM there, nope.

You are humorless. Smogzinn told a joke.

Capcom removed Denuvo from RE Village.

But they also added microtransactions to RE4 remaster. Remember folks, you need to pay real money for the privilege of cheating.
