We are back to Zen 5 having 10% IPC uplift against Zen 4? 😂😂

Zen 5 is now slower than Zen 4 with a 10% IPC gain and 15% clock regression while being 46% faster in cinvench multi-core test while being slower and faster than raptor lake and arrowlake depending on baseline or performance option set for intel cpus.

For the record, I don’t buy for a second a major reworked zen 5 that is wider only gets 10% uplift. If so, they better bulldoze their profits and work on 10% faster clock Zen 4 😜
If Z5 really only delivers 10% IPC gains, Mike Clark needs to keep sleeping then. I mean, heck, if that were truly the case, maybe he was sleeping during all those Z5 internal meetings.

No, it means Charlie is deranged.
Looks like AMD + Intel is following Charlie's lead.

They're adding NPUs and even naming their CPUs "AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 170" or whatever. Probably hoping it'll trigger a new client PC upgrade cycle, resulting in more CPU sales. Everyone in the business gets a slice of the pie. Except that part of nVidia's datacenter pie slice gets shifted to the client pie.

I assume that most of the "AI" hardware (NPU etc) is used for inference and not training, while most of Nvidia's datacenter stuff is used for training.

If I were an OEM I'd add a bit of bauxite to my components and slap an "Al" sticker on them to cash in on the craze. I wonder if Paul Simon would be willing to license one of his songs for a commercial.

I AMD should take it a step further and change the name so it's the rAIzen AI 9 HX 170 AI. Maybe that will communicate to customers that they really need to buy this or their computer won't be able to write dirty limericks for them or hallucinate their dead aunt Sally into the summer barbecue photos.

Since the article says Microsoft's intention is to push part of the AI workload from datacenter to client, I assume currently inferencing is done on datacenter site. So nVidia will lose (part of) that business.

Training part will be kept on datatacenter side though, or on-premises for companies owning the HW used for training themselves. Not sure what accounts for the biggest part of nVidia's AI related sales, training or inferencing. But given that there potentially are hundreds of millions of clients, inferencing ought to be substantial. So not good for nVidia if they lose that part.

Apparently Zen 5 will only have 10% IPC lift and a clock regression while being $999 for top chip. 🙄😂
Who the hell cares about IPC and CPU perf? There will not be any sticker for that.

Marketing will push Average Joe to look for the "AI PC" and "Win 11/12 AI PC compliant" stickers. If unsure which one to choose, ask the store guy for advise, and you'll be directed to the one with the highest AI TOPS at lowest price.

Die space used for increasing IPC, CPU perf, and CPU core count will be dark silicon. 🤣

Of course with AI, the cpus will develop more IPC and performance over time WITH THEIR AI POWWA

Who the hell wants to run Windows 11? I recall reading about it losing market share this last week.

Even if Microsoft offered me $20 to accept the free upgrade they keep trying to push on me, I wouldn't take it.
I installed W11 to follow up on my former Arch Linux system. Used the bleeding edge from the Loonies, I used the bleeding edge from the Corporate Overlord.
It's mostly fine, but the improvements from W10 don't even need the fingers from one hand to be counted.
Only thing I truly hate is the idiotic rounded corners for everything. It's unnecessary and ugly.

Is TPM2.0 the only real reason they're pushing 11?

E-Cores were the primary reason for existence of Windows 11.
E-Cores were also the primary tool to catch up with AMD in Cinebench.

Now, after the power limit fiasco with Intel chips, it seems that Intel can't beat AMD even with addition of E-Cores, so the reason for E-Cores vanished.
