  1. 8GB VRAM not enough (and 10 / 12)

Random Reddit post shows about 2x the performance (even given a 1070 Ti is marginally faster than a vanilla 1070). :)
  2. Old Timers ROLL CALL!

Still here and still posting. :)
  3. Question 4080 to 4090

Back when the 4080 was $1200 and the 4090 was $1600, I feel it was worth it. Now that there's a 4080 Super for $1000, and the 4090 is around $2000, not so much. Since you've already got a 4080, I'd stick with it until the next generation comes around.
  4. Question Greyed out Microsoft Account check box...how to be able to toggle it?

I want to disable the nagging regarding signing into a microsoft account when I log out of my machine. Is there a way to enable this greyed out checkbox? So far my Google Fu has failed me.
  5. NV Super refresh reviews

Very true now, as the performance gap is more like 30-35%. As faster CPUs get released, I expect that gap to grow. That said, there's nothing except maybe Cyberpunk 2077 with RT turned on that's not getting 144+ FPS (limit of my current monitor) when paired with my 7800X3D, so I feel like I'm...
  6. NV Super refresh reviews

Yeah, I got it new for $1600 back in December 2022. So far so good. I do agree the 4090s available at my local Micro Center are $1850 and $2000, and at those prices the value calculations I'm using get altered drastically. The whole product stack across the board needs to get about a 30% price...
  7. NV Super refresh reviews

The 3090 was a horrible value. The 3080 and the 3080 Ti were within spitting distance of its performance. The 4090 is a solid 50% faster than the 4080 in comparison. Even considering the price adjustment for the 4080 Super, they're about equal values given you're getting 50% less memory...
  8. NV Super refresh reviews

So here's my take on this refresh and I expect the 4080 Super to be a dud too based on it having nothing more to offer than a few extra CUDA cores. Nothing still comes close to the 4090 I've had for over a year now and it's a weird thing the halo card is the best value of the whole 4000 series...
  9. NV Super refresh reviews

The only card here worth looking at is the 4070 Ti Super, and only because it finally puts the 4070 series with a 256bit bus, like it should have had on day 1. The other two cards are still a horrible value and overpriced, just less so than the garbage that's been released below the original 4090.
  10. NV 12VHPWR issues revisited

I think it would be good to have screw and optional bolt together pigtails coming off of these graphics cards. https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Connector-2Screw-Voltage-Bulkhead/dp/B07BK1GKG9?th=1

The computer is in my signature. The 5.25in two-way bookshelf speakers and 10in subwoofer are all Klipsch reference series, and they are hooked up to a Klipsch 100w Powergate desktop amplifier.
  12. Discussion Tom's Hardware top 5 AMD and Nvidia GPUs

The 570 was pretty excellent at the time it was released. The 600 (ran hot) and 700 (less hot but not much of a performance increase) series were garbage. The 970 was pretty good as long as you didn't use more than 3.5GB of VRAM. Totally agree the 980 Ti was pretty amazing in terms of...
  13. Question are video card prices headed down yet?

I agree about 2060 being a nuts at $200, but when a 2070S is comparable in most games to a 3060, it's not so nutty at $200.
  14. 8GB VRAM not enough (and 10 / 12)

Reading through these last few responses, I want to chime in on the GPU to VRAM ratio comments. All cards will eventually struggle with GPU limitations at some point in time. However, the software technologies to give them a little more life or longer legs so to speak, also utilize more VRAM...
  15. 8GB VRAM not enough (and 10 / 12)

Yes, at this point in time, let's call a spade a spade. All 8GB cards should be 16GB and all 12GB should be 24GB cards. The only reason they're not is because the workstation equivalent sales would get cannibalized if they put that much VRAM on all their gaming graphics cards. Maybe nVidia...
  16. AMD 7800 / 7700 reviews

I've tried 32in 1440p displays and the pixel density is just too small to the point the image looks grainy. So, for my gaming, I choose to use a 27in at 1440p with higher refresh rates (144 and 165Hz in my household). I agree with you that keeping up the hardware necessary to run 4k at max...
  17. Question How would crossfired 7970's compare to an RX590?

This was THE setup 10 years ago. Probably would run most modern games pretty well still. SLI Titans with a 3770k@4.0Ghz! I'm still using this Zalman case for my home's file server components too. :)
  18. Question Trying to determine if it is worth keeping my RTX 4090

Play Cyberpunk on your 2060 with RT and all quality settings enabled to Ultra and then try it on the 4090. Watch the slideshow become a playable game. Now it won't make the game any more fun, but it'll run smoothly at least.
  19. NV 4060 / 4060TI reviews

This is your cheap (and more underpowered than one would like) content creation card. For gaming it's another waste of sand.
  20. Question New PC centered around RTX4080. Thoughts and Questions

All 16x physical, but the 4060 is 8x electrical.

  22. News Intel GPUs - Intel launches A580

Saying the same thing, but demand is there at the right price. I'd say pricing is about 50% higher than I'd like it across the board for the performance offered.
  23. 4070 reviews thread

We can't even get the US government to regulate the price of life saving medicines. Regulation of gaming toys is not even on their radar.
  24. NV 4060 / 4060TI reviews

Instead of waste of sand, waste of paper?
  25. NV 4060 / 4060TI reviews

That's the entire product stack this generation except for the 4090 IMO. 16GB would have to be on a 256bit memory bus, which is the 4080. A 4080 at $800-900 would sell like hotcakes. As a side note, I've been curiously watching stock of 4060 ti cards at my local Micro Center. Whatever the...
  26. NV 4060 / 4060TI reviews

That's true. nVidia can call any card anything they like as long as the performance justifies the cost. But boy, what they're calling these cut down GPUs and are charging for them is downright insulting, and IMO really feels like a slap in the face after all the nonsense everyone suffered...
  27. NV 4060 / 4060TI reviews

Anyone else feel like the +$100 for adding 8GB of VRAM on the 4060 Ti 16GB is a very Apple move?
  28. NV 4060 / 4060TI reviews

I think going a half-step up in memory bandwidth to 160 bit and adding 10GB of GDDR7 is what the 4060 Super will look like. I imagine the price would stay constant at $399. Maybe they'll discount the 4060 16GB to $399 to clear the chips out they couldn't sell and because the glut of RAM (or at...
  29. NV 4060 / 4060TI reviews

nVidia is only in the software business. Didn't you get the memo?!
  30. NV 4060 / 4060TI reviews

I think this is my favorite review quote from today. "There's some real screwy shit going on when you'd be better off buying a used 1080 Ti from 2017 for 200 bucks than a midrange card from 2023."
  31. NV 4060 / 4060TI reviews

I think the lack of sales will continue until nVidia releases 40x0 Super cards that will be at least half-way back up the stack to where they should be (at least in my mind). e.g. a 4060 Super could be a 160bit part with 10GB of VRAM, etc for the same $299.
  32. Question Extending the life of a GPU. Thermal Paste Question

Thermalright 1.0 and 0.5mm are what I keep on hand too. Fairly priced and up to the task. I've done some repad and repaste jobs on a 3090 and a couple of 3080 cards.
  33. Question Extending the life of a GPU. Thermal Paste Question

I use a tiny amount of Noctua NT-H1 to hold a 40x40mm graphite thermal pad in place when I install the HSF unit, and I figure it fills in some interstitial spaces on the pad once it's in place too. Temps with and without paste are within 5°C of each other in my experiences. I have pads...
  34. Poll: Do you care about ray tracing / upscaling?

Same except I prefer high (80+) FPS at 1440p. It's nice the 4090 can play older games using very little wattage as well.
  35. 8GB VRAM not enough (and 10 / 12)

I dunno about inevitable. The way we're headed the 5080 will be a 192bit part with 12GB; kinda kidding and kinda not.
  36. Question How important it is to have UPS if I have a NAS?

Nice setup! I assume you'd need to buy client NICs too at added cost. I just have a QNAP 5-port 2.5Gb unmanaged switch I bought for about $110. It uses existing Cat5e/6 cabling, and my file server, the Zyxel AP (I use a 2.5Gb POE+ injector for this), and a couple of my computers have 2.5Gb...
  37. Question How important it is to have UPS if I have a NAS?

I'm cheap and can wait for my files to sync. I use 2.5Gbit ethernet so my spinners aren't bottlenecked, but even 7200rpm RAID0 would be bottlenecked by my LAN connection (solid state to solid state max is about 290MB/sec) currently. Side note - I think it's fun that my laptop is faster...
  38. Question How important it is to have UPS if I have a NAS?

RAID0 for performance other types of RAID for uptime is really the short answer for all of it. This is a personal preference of mine, but the 2x12TB in my file server is basically a mirrored set of data that gets synced daily. I could use RAID1 for those, but I'd rather eliminate the...
  39. 8GB VRAM not enough (and 10 / 12)

Totally, I only purchased a 5800X3D, 5800X , 5700X, 5950X, 5600G, and 7700X in the last 3 years; I really need to do more. ;) On topic - I think a lot of the downturn has to do with families like mine that poured money into updated and new machines for home school during COVID, but now are...
  40. 8GB VRAM not enough (and 10 / 12)

At the end of it all, my opinion is buying a future proof nVidia card at $1000+ (only the 4080 and 4090 are future proofed at all IMO) is very tiring. I won't keep up that purchasing treadmill and I can't do it for my 3 sons.
